AC Students Study Abroad

Posted: July 6, 2009

Eleven students in the Amarillo College Honors Program visited the United Kingdom April 14-24 as participants in the inaugural AC Study Abroad Program.

The students’ focus of study was history, art and music, and the experience included visits to, among other destinations of interest, St. Paul’s Cathedral for services, the British Museum, and the Globe Theatre for a performance of As You Like It.

The summer course was made possible through partnerships between the Honors Program, the AC Foundation and Harlaxton College in Grantham, UK. In preparation for their journey, the students studied the influence of the Magna Carta on the U.S. Constitution and many common laws, and they ultimately participated in a seminar at Lincoln Castle, where one of the few original copies of the Magna Carta is housed.

Each of the AC students also researched specific historical locations, literary figures or other relevant subject matter prior to the trip and delivered oral presentations before the group met with professional tutors.

AC students who made the journey are listed alphabetically: Kaitlyn Banks, Karli Black, Gina Graham, Cindy Maggiuli, Cait Mongrain, Sara Mullins, Nick Sharber, Gus Trujillo, Brittany Vargus, Mykey Warren and Kristen Weatherholt.

The AC cohort also participated in tutored programs at Burghley House, a 16th century manor house designed by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I; Lord Byron’s Newstead Abby; the Bronte Parsonage; and Wordworth’s Dove Cottage in the Lake District, according to Judy Carter, professor of speech and coordinator of the Honors Program.

She also said that several of the students who made the trip received their associate degrees from AC in May and have been accepted into baccalaureate programs or are already studying at Harvard University, Texas Tech University or West Texas A&M University, while others will continue in the AC Honors Program this fall.

Also making the trip with Judy Carter from AC were Carol Nicklaus, past chair of the Honors Program, and Joan Urban, who presently chairs the Humanities Department.

Judy Carter invites students who are interested in the AC Honors Program to contact her at 806-371-5278.
