Tuition Unchanged in 2009

Posted: August 11, 2009

Registration for fall classes is ongoing at Amarillo College, where tuition remains exactly the same this year as in 2008—low and affordable.

The first day of fall classes is Monday, Aug. 24, and early indications are that AC’s fall enrollment could surpass its 2008 total by as much as 10 percent.

AC’s tuition for district residents—last year and this year—is $34 per semester credit hour. Basic fees remain $24.75 per semester credit hour.

A full-time student residing in this community-college district who enrolls in 15 credit hours can expect to pay about $880 for tuition and fees at AC. That compares to approximately $3,100 for the same 15 hours at a public university in Texas, according to collegefortexans.com.

“We made a conscious effort to avoid raising our tuition this year,” Paul Matney, president of Amarillo College, said. “These are difficult economic times, and the last thing our students need right now is to see an increase—even a small one—in the cost of their tuition.

“We have grappled with our budget. It has been a challenge,” he said, “but we are committed for the remainder of 2009 to extending the same low tuition and fees that we offered a year ago and to do so with a balanced budget.”
