Listed below are minimum criteria to be considered for admission into the Dental Hygiene Program.

  1. Have a high school diploma or a GED.
  2. Be 18 years old at the completion of the program.  Both men and women are eligible to apply to the Dental Hygiene Program regardless of marital status or age.  Amarillo College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnic, national origin or disability status.
  3. Have at least a minimum 2.5 GPA in completed college courses including general education courses and any previously completed Dental Hygiene courses.  Once accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program all courses in the Dental Hygiene curriculum require a minimum numerical grade of 75 which is a "C".
  4. Complete and submit an application to the Dental Hygiene Program and to Amarillo College.  All transcripts must be on file in the registrar's office AND a copy of each transcript must be submitted with the program application.
  5. Possess all of your civil rights at the date of application.  Anyone who has been convicted of a felony must document the details of the conviction with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners to obtain a ruling concerning the permissibility of any future dental hygiene licensure.  If the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners rules that the felony prevents the applicant from future licensure, the application for program admission to Amarillo College must be postponed until such time that the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners may reverse its position.
  6. Complete TWO separate dental office observations.  The visits must be documented using the Dental Office Observation Form enclosed in the application packet.
  7. Provide a signed Waiver and Release of Liability form.
  8. Demonstrate proof of compliance with the Texas Immunization Requirements.
  9. Provide proof of a current CPR card for healthcare providers.
  10. Provide a biographcal sketch.
  11. Provide three reference letters.
  12. Complete a criminal background check through PRECHECK.  If the criminal background check comes back "Not Clear" the student may not be admitted into the Dental Hygiene Program.
  13. Admission into any of the DHYG courses require that the student be able to fully participate physically and mentally on all clinic/rotation/community service activities in such a way as to not pose a risk to the safety of a patient or him/herself.  A student must be able to lift fifty pounds without assistance, hear and speak the English language and see with a visual acuity not less than that required for a Texas driver's license (20/40).  The applicant must meet the Functional Requirement Standards for Admission and Progression in the Program.
  14. Earn sufficient points to be placed on the class roster. 
  15.   16. Complete the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA).
  17. Have at least a 2.5 GPA in completed college courses including general education courses and any previously completed dental hygiene courses in order to be accepted into the program.  Once accepted into the dental hygiene program, all courses in the dental hygiene curriculum require a minimum numerical grade of 75 which is a "C".
  18. Provide a copy of current drivers' license.
  19. Provide a biographical sketch and three reference letters as outlined in the Dental Hygiene Application.
  20. Complete a Criminal Background Check through Precheck.
  21. The procedure for receiving admission points is described in the "Admission Process" section in the dental hygiene application.
  22. Be willing to abide by the patient confidentiality statement, professional behavior policy and the personal appearance standards as outlined in the dental hygiene application.
  23. An incomplete application portfolio will not be reviewed for admission into the Dental Hygiene Program.
  24. Submit application materials by the stated deadline.
  25. From the pool of applicants filing by the deadline, invitations will be extended to the top 50 eligible candidates for interviews with the selection committee. These invitations will be mailed approximately three to four weeks after the application deadline.
  26. The 50 eligible candidates will be asked to appear on one of the two interview dates (typically in April) at the Dental Hygiene Department, West Campus Jones Hall 1st Floor Dental, 6222 West Ninth, Amarillo, Texas. The visit will consist of a tour of our facility, aptitude testing, and a brief interview with the selection committee. Please feel free to bring a spouse or family member with you for support, but only the candidate will appear for the interview. The cost of the PSB Health Occupations Aptitude Exam is $20.00 and will be administered by the Amarillo College Testing Center.
  27. Earn sufficient points to be placed on the class roster.
  28. The candidates chosen to make up the class will be notified by mail the last day of May.
  29. If any positions in the class remain open they will be filled by the most qualified alternates by the end of June.
