Mathematics Examination and Placement Policy
Placement into mathematics courses at Amarillo College is based on standardized test scores and high school records .Students without scores or transfer credit should take a placement exam during their initial advising session. This will be administered by the Testing Center. A prerequisite course must be completed with a grade average of C or higher, or the student must have the consent of the department chair to take the course. Students will not receive credits for a mathematics course that is prerequisite for a previously completed course. Most mathematics courses require the student to have a graphing calculator. For advise on which model to buy, contact the course instructor or the department chair. At the present time, the TI-83, TI83 Plus or TI 83 Silver Edition are commonly used.
What to do if you miss the first day of class.
You missed some important information on the first day and you'll have to go to some extra effort so that you don't fall behind. But you can do it!!
- If your instructor has a web page for the course (see the link from their on their name on the Math Faculty Page, go to that web page, find the syllabus and course information. If your instructor doesn't have a web page, look at the departmental information for your course.
- Make sure that you have met the prerequisite for the course. FInd that from the departmental information. Your instructor discussed that with your class on the first day and helped those who didn't meet the prerequisite to get some advice. If you have questions, plan to talk with your instructor outside of classwhen you go on the second day. Or find any instructor of the course and discuss it with him/her right away. You can also make an appointment with the department chair.
- Find the name of the book and author from the website and go buy the book right away. The bookstore also has information about which textbooks are usedfor which section of the course. Start reading the book and working problems. Perhaps you can tell from the handout what material the instructor covered on the first day. If that isn' clear to you, assume they covered about the first two sections of the book. Read those and work about every other odd-number problem in the exercise at the end of the section.
If you miss more than one class at the beginning of the semester, it is even more critical that you buy the textbook and start doing the problems. When you show up for class the first time, you should be able to demonstrate that you have covered about two sections of the textbook for every class that you missed.
Individual class information
While individual instructors have some flexibility in designing their courses, each will conform to the departmental material available from the course syllabi. Each instructor will give the student a first-day handout that gives students information all about the topics on these departmental handouts and, in addition, information about the instructors phone number, office hours, grading schemeand information about their policies on attendance, homework, withdrawals and incompletes.
Information on the AC Math Page
Some of the instructors make their individual course information available on the AC Math Page. Some have supplemental material that may be of interest to all students, not just those in their section. A list of individual faculty members' websites with information about the courses are available at the Faculty Link.
Student Rights and Responsibilities, Student Complaints
A student who has a grievance concerning a course in which he or she is enrolled should make an appeal in the following order:
- Instructor
- Department Chair
- Division Chair
- Vice President/Dean of Instruction
- College President
