Amarillo College, in response to a growing demand for multi-skilled practitioners capable of assuming a wide range of roles in physician’s offices and other healthcare settings, has established a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Program.
The program will be offered in full beginning next fall; however, that first cohort of CMA students is being asked to take two classes this summer to lay the groundwork—Medical Terminology in the first summer session, and Computer Skills in the second.
Prospective CMA students are invited to contact Mark Rowh, program advisor, at (806) 354-6070 or firstname.lastname@example.org to register for the first cohort or learn more about the program, which takes two full semesters to complete and leads to a Level I certificate.
A CMA is trained to handle both administrative and clinical duties, everything from scheduling appointments, billing and bookkeeping, to assisting with examinations, drawing blood and performing basic first aid and CPR.
“This is a certificate program that leads to jobs that are a mix of traditional office work and hands-on clinical procedures,” said Rowh, the AC advisor who also serves as dean of health sciences. “A CMA might answer phones or file insurance forms, then administer injections or remove sutures.
“That kind of versatility makes a CMA invaluable for increasing productivity in both large and small healthcare facilities.”
The aging baby boomer population will continue to drive the demand for CMAs to support doctors and nurses. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 29-percent increase in employment opportunities for CMAs over the next 10 years.
The AC program is designed to be either a “next step” for certified nurse’s aides who want to move up the healthcare ladder, or as a “stand alone” program for anyone interested in entering the profession; you need no previous healthcare training to participate in the CMA Program.
Classes for the CMA Program will initially be delivered on AC’s West Campus, but online options will be implemented in the future. Once a certification of completion is awarded, graduates will be entitled to sit for national certification exams.
