Alumnus Establishes Scholarship for Mass Media Program

May 15, 2014

Braden Whaley, a 1999 graduate of Amarillo College, has established a scholarship for students who follow in his academic footsteps—journalism and public relations.

The Communicare Media Scholarship will provide $1,000 per year ($500 each semester) for a full-time student enrolled in AC’s Mass Media Program.

Applicants must have completed one semester in AC’s Mass Media Program and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Recipients will be selected by a Mass Media Scholarship Selection Committee. Journalism majors will receive preference, but qualified advertising and public relations majors also will receive consideration.

“This is my way of giving back to the community,” said Whaley, who resides in Dallas and works in proposal development for Sebesta, Inc., an engineering and design services provider. “I spent a long time paying back; now I’ve arrived at a point where I’m able to pay something forward, and I’m happy to do it.

“The education I received at Amarillo College gave me a solid foundation,” he said. “AC helped me develop a lot of the skills I utilize professionally today.”

Whaley served as editor-in-chief for AC’s student newspaper, The Ranger, during the 1997-98 school year. The Amarillo High School graduate also served on the publicity committee for AC’ Student Government Association.
