Staying Connected Through Games

Stay connected with your friends and family while having fun and socially distancing.

It’s not always easy to spend time with friends and family these days, especially with social distancing precautions in place. We want to be safe and keep others safe, but we also want to be able to still have fun and socialize. A great way to do that is by playing games online together. Here are fourteen games you can play online with family and friends.

Jackbox

Jackbox Games

Jackbox is one of the best resources for playing games with family and friends. With 35 available games, there’s something for everyone. Games range from trivia, elimination, drawing/Pictionary, and funniest statements similar to Apples to Apples/Cards Against Humanity. A couple of my favorite games are Push the Button and Trivia Murder Party. In Push the Button you are part of a crew on a space ship, but some of your crew members are alien invaders. The goal is to figure out who is an alien and eject them into space before time runs out. In Trivia Murder Party, you must answer trivia questions correctly in each round or you’ll find yourself on The Killing Floor, where you compete in minigames to determine if you’ll survive another round or become a ghost.

Available on: Windows, macOS, Linux, Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Apple TV & iPad, Amazon Fire TV, Steam, Humble, Fanatical, Epic Games, Mac App Store, Android TV

Ticket to Ride

Ticket to Ride

Ticket to Ride is a cross-country train adventure in which players collect and play matching train cards to claim railway routes connecting cities throughout North America. The longer the routes, the more points they earn. Additional points come to those who can fulfill their Destination Tickets by connecting two distant cities, and to the player who builds the longest continuous railway.

Available on: iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, Windows, macOS, Steam

Among Us

Among Us

This one has been blowing up all over the internet lately, especially on social media and YouTube. Among Us is a multiplayer game where a crew must discover which players are imposters who seek to assassinate each of the innocent crew members. They must figure this out before the imposters are able to kill the majority of the innocent players. The roles alternate each game so everyone gets a chance to be both imposter and innocent. Among Us can be played with a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 10 players.

Available on: iOS, Android, Windows, Steam

Werewolf

Virtual Werewolf

This is a classic game many of us played as kids. It goes by so many names, including Werewolf, Murder in the Dark, Detective, Murder Mystery, etc. To play, one person will be the narrator who will randomly distribute the following roles to the other players via private message/email:

  • Werewolf: a werewolf has two jobs: eat villagers and survive to eat more villagers.
  • Villagers: these are the common folks in the game who have no special powers, but desperately hope to survive the night.
  • Doctor: the doctor can save one villager each round.
  • Hunter: If the hunter dies, the hunter can point a finger at any other player and take that person down with them.

Once you’re ready to start the game, the narrator declares that “night has fallen” and all players must turn off their cameras and microphones. After a few seconds the narrator says “werewolves wake up”, and any players who are werewolves must choose a single victim via private message.

The narrator then puts the werewolves back to sleep and has the doctor and hunter wake up in sequence. During the doctor’s turn, he/she can point to one player to save them from the jaws of the werewolf. If the doctor selects the same player as the werewolf, then nobody dies during the night. When the hunter chooses a player, the narrator can answer yes or no to whether that player is a werewolf.

After everyone has taken their turn, the narrator declares “the sun is coming up” and names the player(s) the werewolves ate or that no-one was eaten if the doctor chose correctly. All players can turn on their cameras/mics, and then debate on who the werewolf might be. To end the round, all players vote on one player to eliminate from the game or can pass and wait until the next round. Any player that is eliminated by werewolves or by vote becomes a friendly ghost who is not allowed to speak for the rest of the game. Repeat until the only remaining players are werewolves or villagers.

Available on: All you need to play this is a video chat. Zoom is preferable because of the private messaging function, but you could also use Google meet in conjunction with Slack or some other private messaging app.
