Folks with a fondness for opera will have two opportunities in May to attend Opera Scenes – each an hour of free vocal performances by students under the tutelage of Mary Jane Johnson, professor of music at Amarillo College.

Opera ScenesOpera Scenes will be presented on the Washington Street Campus at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 11 in the Concert Hall Theater, and again at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13 in the courtyard adjacent to the Concert Hall Theater.

Johnson, who also serves as voice-artist in residence at AC, said the workshops give her studio students a chance to perform fun music from well-known productions, while providing free entertainment for opera enthusiasts, family and friends.

Each of these free workshops will feature music by Gilbert and Sullivan and from famed productions like The Magic Flute, Sweeny Todd, and more. About a dozen AC students ranging in age from 18 to 32 will perform.

Because the Saturday performance of Opera Scenes will be conducted in a more casual, outdoor environment, attendees are invited to bring picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs as they wish.
