Imagine receiving a tidy stipend to see those classes through.
It can definitely happen at Amarillo College’s Innovation Outpost, which today is pleased to introduce its transformative Career Accelerator – through which students can acquire high-tech, industry-specific skills leading to unlimited career attainment.
The Career Accelerator debuts this fall by offering a pair of free 10-week “sprints” – Full Stack Web-Development or Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Skills Certification. Additionally, students accepted into these programs will receive $2,500 stipends to help offset living expenses, making the Career Accelerator the first initiative to leverage the $15 million gift AC received this summer from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
In July, upon receipt of Scott’s unanticipated gift, AC President Russell Lowery-Hart said the bulk of the windfall would be placed in an endowment to generate earnings and benefit the College in perpetuity, while a portion of the gift could go to support initiatives that transform and serve the community.
“Amarillo College is dedicated to student success and maximizing the economic viability of this region, and our Career Accelerator raises the bar on both accounts,” Lowery-Hart said. “It is not only incumbent upon AC to foster a vibrant economic future for our region, it is imperative if we intend to flourish as a community.
“Our gratitude to Ms. Scott will long endure.”
Both of the Career Accelerator’s inaugural sprints are intensive and designed to equip students with specific in-demand skills. Classes, which begin Oct. 11 and run through Dec. 17, will meet from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., five days a week. Space is limited; interested applicants should act now.
Full Stack Web Development focuses on foundational knowledge of JavaScript stack plus the latest technologies of React, HTML, CCS, Git, MySQL, and software architecture principals. Students can emerge from this boot camp equipped to build for the web and potentially jumpstart a career in coding. Prework and applications are due by Sept. 13.

Amarillo College is an AWS Academy member institution. The AWS Cloud Skills sprint focuses on AWS’s cloud infrastructure and the skills and knowledge needed to achieve highly sought professional certifications that take careers to the next level. Students can emerge from this sprint with two AWS certifications – Cloud Practitioner and SysOps Administrator. Applications are due by Sept. 30.

While these first sprint offerings represent the launch of the Career Accelerator at AC’s Innovation Outpost, they ultimately will serve as the foundation for what will become a robust and collegial coding and cloud computing ecosystem that will serve the community well into the foreseeable future.
