Because they are beneficially rigorous by design, some classes at Amarillo College may not be entirely fun and games, but intramurals at AC sure are.

A variety of intramural leagues, tournaments and special events – all coed – are open to students at AC this spring, not only team sports like basketball and softball, but contests for individuals, too, such as a 500-mile run/walk challenge.

“Our intramurals are about to be in full swing this spring with an entire slate of activities,” Trent Oneal, intramural coordinator, said. “We try to offer something for everyone who likes to participate in games and sports, and we encourage everybody to come on out and join in the fun.”

The semester’s slate of intramural activities begins with popular 5-on-5 basketball, a season that gets underway Feb. 3, and there’s a twist from the norm. Intramural basketball at AC is traditionally played in the Carter Fitness Center on the Washington Street Campus, but that storied building is currently being renovated. Therefore, all basketball games this spring will be played in the well-maintained gym in the Student Services Center on the East Campus.

Other sports such as softball, soccer and sand volleyball will be played outdoors later on in the spring on the Washington Street Campus. Teams and/or individuals can register to participate at this link.

Oneal says additional events and activities will be announced later in the semester. Outdoor dodgeball, for example, is always a hit, and a March Madness bracket contest gives everyone a chance to win prizes. Of course, for anyone who is up to it, there’s the 500-mile challenge in which participants vie for prizes by downloading an app that records every mile traversed.

Any student enrolled at Amarillo College may participate in AC’s intramural leagues, tournaments and special events as long as the student is enrolled in at least one credit hour, including dual credit students. All Amarillo College faculty and staff are eligible to participate, too.
