Joan J. Coleman, Ph.D., was raised in Wellington and began her noteworthy career in education at Amarillo College. She enrolled at AC during the Great Depression and graduated in 1932. That launched her on a journey to additional degrees from West Texas State College, Harding University, Kansas State University and the University of Chicago. She taught at both Pennsylvania and Florida State universities, and she served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She and her husband, Dale Coleman, moved to Moore County in 1957 and established Agrienterprises, Inc., then established both the Mr. and Mrs. Dale Coleman Scholarship and the Dumas Financial Aid Fund at Amarillo College. Joan also served as a director of the Amarillo College Foundation, and in 2000 she became the first contributor to the Moore County Student Endowment Campaign.
