G. William Miller, a product of Borger who became Federal Reserve Board chairman and served as secretary of the U.S. Treasury, got his start at Amarillo College, where he studied mathematics and physics in 1941-1942. He graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, serving in the Pacific Theatre from 1945-1945. He received a law degree from the University of California and joined Textron Inc., in 1956, the parent company of Bell Helicopter. He was CEO of Textron Inc., from 1968-1978. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter nominated him to be chairman of the Federal Reserve. One day short of his 53rd birthday (March 8, 1978), he took over the Federal Reserve. On July 19, 1979, Carter nominated him for the U.S. Treasury spot and on Aug. 6, 1979, G. William Miller became the 65th secretary of the Treasury.
