What are Honors classes?

Honors classes are designed especially for students who want to excel in college. The courses are NOT designed to be harder or to pile on more work; however, they will challenge you to do your best work. Because the classes are small, faculty can devote special attention in helping you be successful.

Who should take an Honors course?

You should take an honors course if this describes you:

  • I have a 3.0 GPA (or 90 if coming from high school)
  • I like academic challenges
  • I want to learn more than the minimum required
  • I am motivated, intellectually curious, committed to learning, desire to excel

What are the benefits of taking Honors courses?

You associate with other students, who like you, want to make the most of your college experience.

It builds your transfer or work resume.

Your transcript will indicate an “H” next to the course, signifying you met a higher standard, making you a strong transfer candidate and a strong contender for scholarships.

Small classes allow for active learning, projects and/or service opportunities that are not otherwise possible for faculty to offer.

Honors courses help you achieve your full potential

How do I enroll in an Honors course?

You may self-enroll through AC Connect, or you may contact your advisor, or Judy Carter at jhcarter@actx.edu

Do I have to take specific Honors courses?

No. You may take one course or several. Students may take Honors courses in their field of study as well as in elective courses.

Is there an application process?

No. If you have a 3.0 GPA (or 90 if coming from high school), you qualify. Just enroll!

Does it cost more to take an Honors course?

No.

Is the Honors Program a club?

No. Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honors Society for Two Year Colleges.  You do not have to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa to take Honors classes.

Will an Honors course bring down my GPA.

Honors courses involve roughly the same amount of outside work as any regular class you take. Most students who get A’s and B’s in typical classes will receive the same grade in an Honors course. You just have more fun earning that grade!

Are Honors classes the same as Presidential Scholars?

No. Presidential Scholars is a learning community that requires specific courses and an application process; but it comes with scholarships and other advantages. Click on the Presidential Scholar button for more information.
