Course Completion

Amarillo College’s vision statement is to ensure a 70% completion rate by 2020. This starts by increasing course success rates while maintaining course rigor. The following data shows course success rates over a four year period.

Developmental Courses

The role that developmental education plays in student completion is pivotal in terms of both placement and course success. The following data shows the success rate for developmental courses over a nine semester period.

Another factor significantly impacting student success in developmental courses was our implementation of an eight week course model. This model provides students with the opportunity to complete their developmental sequence in a single semester. The following data shows the success rates from the first semester we offered courses under this model.

Gateway Courses

Amarillo College designates a course as a gateway course if course enrollment is high but success rates are low. The following courses were designated as gateway courses in 2013: Biology for Science Majors I (BIOL-1406), Biology for Science Majors II (BIOL-1407), Anatomy and Physiology I (BIOL-2401), Anatomy and Physiology II (BIOL-2402), Principles of Chemistry I (CHEM-1311), Principles of Chemistry II (CHEM-1312), Composition I (ENGL-1301), Composition II (ENGL-1302), United States History I (HIST-1301), United States History II (HIST-1302), College Algebra (MATH-1314), College Algebra/STEM (MATH-1414), and General Psychology (PSYC-2301). The following data shows the success rate over a nine semester period.

Once again, the most significant impact on course success has been in implementing an eight week model for gateway courses just as we did for developmental courses.

Retention - Cohort based Fall-to-Fall

Fall-to-Fall retention is a primary metric in regards to Amarillo College’s commitment to increasing the number of students who complete a certificate, degree, and/or transfer to a 4-year institution while focusing on decreasing the time it takes to complete a degree. The most accurate way to measure time to completion is to base it on First-Time-In-College (FTIC) cohorts so we track retention based on the same cohorts.

Graduation

Amarillo College’s Vision to ensure a 70% completion rate by 2020 is partly based on Fall FTIC students receiving a certificate and/or degree within three years.

Transfer to 4-Year Institution

Another measure of completion is the rate at which Fall FTIC students transfer to 4-year institutions within three years.

Job Placement Rates

Amarillo College is currently developing a more robust method for determining job placement rates for our students who graduate with a certificate and/or an AAS degree. For now, we rely upon THECB Gainful Employment data. We understand that this does not provide us with a direct relation between graduates and their employment in a field related to the certificate and/or associates degree that they recieved.
