The TSI Assessment is a program designed to help your institution determine if you are ready for college-level course work in the general areas of reading, writing and mathematics. If you are an incoming college student in Texas, you are required to take the TSI Assessment — unless you are already exempt (see below) — to determine your readiness for college-level work. Based on how you perform, you may either be enrolled in a college-level course that matches your skill level or be placed in the appropriate developmental course or intervention to improve your skills and prepare you for success in college-level courses.
Students should contact the Advising Department to determine specific testing requirements, or click below to view testing exemptions and exceptions.
All prospective students are required to complete a Pre Assessment Activity prior to scheduling the TSI. This activity includes information on Amarillo College resources, college preparation and study material for the TSI.
Any student TSI testing for the first time is required to attend a MAP session (MAndatory Pre-Assesment) in the Success Center. To schedule your MAP session, please contact the Success Center at 806-345-5542.
Amarillo College distance education students will complete an online Pre-Assessment Activity at www.actx.edu/tsi.
The appropriate Pre-Assessment Activity MUST be completed prior to testing or TSI scores will be invalidated. If you have any questions, please contact the Testing Center at 806-371-5445.
The TSI is administered Monday-Friday at 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Additional testing times may be available. It is a computer based assessment that is not timed (approximately 1-2 hours per section). A valid photo ID is required to test.
Distance Education students may take the TSI exam at a college or university near them. For more information, or to set up and off site TSI, please contact Testing Services at 806-371-5445.
