Hazlewood Act

The Hazlewood Act exempts qualified veterans taking classes at public institutions in Texas from all tuition and fees. Books, supplies, and living expenses are not covered. The exemption will pay for continuing education classes as long as those classes receive state funding.

Qualifications for tuition exemption:

  • Veterans who were residents of Texas at the time of enlistment in the Armed Forces,
  • who are Texas residents at the time of enrollment and have resided in Texas for at least the past 12 months,
  • who served on active military duty, excluding training, for more than 181 days
  • who are not in default on a guaranteed loan,
  • who received an honorable discharge, and
  • who have exhausted eligibility for federal veterans' educational benefits

Provide the Amarillo College VA office with the following:

  • a copy of your DD214 or WD53
  • a letter stating you are no longer eligible for VA benefits
to obtain this letter, call 1-800-827-1000, press -0- for the operator

Individuals may receive both Hazlewood and Pell or SEOG at the same time.  There is a maximum of 150 credit hours of college courses for which a person may receive benefit under Hazlewood. This limit is on credit hours attempted, not credit hours completed.

Veterans Affairs

Amarillo College is approved by the Texas Education Agency to offer instruction to students attending college under the various laws commonly referred to as the GI Bill. Eligible students should contact the Veterans Certification Clerk, in the Registrar’s Office, prior to registration to obtain needed information relative to their benefits, enrollment and certification of attendance.
