Artist Statement

For the theme of fantasy, my mind immediately went to mystical creatures. I decided on doing mermaids because they have a dark but also light and vibrant feel. I wanted my photos to mimic that feel and look, with the vibrant colors and haziness. Since mermaids are something that seem from another world, I incorporated the frames as a pathway to look into that fantasy world and bring it into our world. As I was putting these thoughts together, I came up with the idea that there are humans who possess these magical, mermaid frames, allowing them to show these mermaids places on land for them to explore.

Instructor’s Note

This series was created for the Photo Digital Imaging II course. Students are tasked with creating a fantasy world with 3 or more photographs that looks realistic. Euly put a great deal of effort into this project and paid attention to the details. They are self-portraits of her as a mermaid. She designed the costumes, selected locations, painted her nails, and embellished the frames. The resulting images are beautifully rendered and show her skill as a digital artist. – Rene´ West
