2000—Dr. Ernestine Smith

2000—Dr. Ernestine Smith

Dr. Ernestine Smith was part of only the second class to graduate from Amarillo College (1932) and she went on to become one of the city’s earliest female doctors. Ernestine, a founding member of Phi Theta Kappa at AC, earned her bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University and  was one of only two women to graduate from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston in 1938. She returned to Amarillo in 1941 and practiced for 40 years. During those years she delivered more than 4,000 babies, including five on a single night, she once reminisced. She also served as the first woman president of the Potter-Randall Medical Society.
