Vocational Nursing offers a uniquely rewarding career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) that is highly valued and respected. The Vocational Nursing Program is a one-year Certificate of Completion program. Students completing the VN curriculum are prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) for licensure as a Vocational Nurse. Graduates function as beginning practitioners in many different health care agencies including hospitals, clinics, physician offices, public schools, and nursing homes.
Amarillo College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Vocational Nursing Program is approved by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON).

- Nursing is a dynamic and evolving profession providing holistic centered care within the health care system. The role of nursing is to assist in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health. This unique role is accomplished through collaborative, caring relationships which focus on identifying and responding to the needs of individuals, families, and communities along the developmental life continuum. The practice of nursing is guided by ideas, beliefs, and values which reflect a concern for quality of life and respect for human value.
- Education Philosophy
- Nursing education is a process involving the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values of nursing. Students take a proactive role in this process by assuming responsibility and accountability for their own learning. Faculty facilitate this process by guiding, encouraging, and inspiring students to problem solve, to gain competency and confidence in nursing practice, and to foster a commitment to lifelong learning.
- Graduate Philosophy
- The graduate of the Vocational Nursing Graduate is prepared as a beginning practitioner to provide and manage legal and ethical nursing care in a variety of health care settings. Graduates meet the competencies of national and state agencies and are prepared to write the NCLEX-PN examination.
When considering Vocational Nursing as a major, please be aware of the following information:
- Students enrolling in this program must be high school graduates or provide proof of GED.
- Prerequisite courses (BIOL 2401 and HECO 1322) are offered during fall, spring, and summer sessions. Vocational Nursing courses are offered during fall and spring semesters..
- Level I and Level II clinicals,classes, and labs are approximately 8 hours per day (40 hours per week, (Monday-Friday).
