AC esports program seeks more members, additional national titles

If you are a gamer at Amarillo College, Christopher George would like to make your acquaintance, but please move to the front of the line if you have a special knack for deploying palm-released biotic orbs.

Virtually, of course.

George is director of AC Badger Esports, and he invites AC students of all majors to participate in all levels of gaming – from casual to highly competitive – at AC’s state-of-the-art gaming center on the fourth floor of Parcells Hall. However, the most serious e-athletes are likely to be tasked with adding to the program’s trophy case, which presently boasts four national titles – three in Overwatch (a hotbed of biotic orbs) and one in Valorant.

“Where varsity esports is concerned, we are looking for serious players who are dedicated to the sport, players who’ve been grinding and moving up in their respective games,” George said. “But we promote the entire ecosphere of gaming at AC, where we can all come together and compete casually against each other and competitively against other schools.

“Our program offers social engagement, travel opportunities – just last year we competed at Penn State University – and community service opportunities,” he said. “We’ll be representing AC again this April at Yellow City Comic Con, for example, and we annually support up-and-coming players at events like the Region 16 High School Regional Esports Championship.”

George launched AC Badger Esports in the fall of 2018 and his AC varsity teams swiftly began chalking up major successes in GGleagues Division B competition. That success not only put AC on the collegiate esports map, but it has catapulted Badger Esports into the uppermost echelon of the sport; AC now competes against major universities at the preeminent Division I level.

“Esports at AC is for everybody,” George said. “Serious gamers love it, but so does anyone who wants to get together regularly to simply share their love for gaming. Everyone is invited and more than welcome to join AC Badger Esports.”
