Course Description: This program is certified by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation – Offender Education Programs. It is required by law for persons convicted of a first offense DWI and receiving probation.
Failure to complete the program within 180 days (unless an extension was granted) from the date probation was granted will result in the offender's license being revoked. The license cannot be reinstated until the educational program is completed.
Due to the general alcohol education components in this course, it is also an appropriate sanction for those who have violated their probation or parole through the use of alcohol alone or because of an alcohol-related arrest (such as Public Intoxication) and do not appear to have a major substance abuse problem.
This standardized program is 12 hours in length and is designed to help offenders increase their knowledge about alcohol and drugs as these substances relate to driving skills, to identify their own individual drinking/drug use and driving patterns, and to assist them in developing plans which will reduce the probability of future DWI behavior.
Specific course topics include alcohol/drug and traffic safety problems, Texas laws relating to DWI, effects of alcohol/drugs on humans, alcohol/drugs and driving task abilities, chemical dependency, symptoms of dependency, sources of assistance, costs of DWI, and decision-making.
The cost for this course is $95. Refunds or class transfers must be requested at least one day prior to the start of class. After this period, students will be required to register and pay for another class.
Students are required to register and pay prior to the first class. It is recommended that students register as early as possible, because classes reach maximum enrollment quickly.
Students with outstanding obligations to Amarillo College may not be allowed to enroll in or complete a continuing education course until their obligations are fulfilled. Students who have received a Criminal Trespass Warning from Amarillo College will not be allowed to enroll in courses held on any AC campus unless the warning has been lifted.
Students must be on time and attend all sessions in consecutive order. There will be no exceptions or make-up classes allowed. Students MUST provide their County of Conviction and Cause Number to the instructor.
Students are required to bring an adult translator with them if they have limited or no proficiency in the English language.
