Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Course Description

An introduction to the automotive industry including automotive history, safety practices, shop equipment and tools, vehicle subsystems, service publications, professional responsibilities and basic automotive maintenance. May be taught manufacturer specific.

Student Performance

End-of-Course Outcomes: Utilize appropriate safety procedures; describe historical development and career information of the automotive industry; demonstrate safe, professional, and responsible work practices; demonstrate the proper use of shop equipment and tools; describe the eight Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) vehicle subsystems; use service information; and perform basic automotive maintenance.

1. Identify general shop safety rules and procedures.

  • 5 mph speed limit
  • No more than 10 cars in the shop at one time
  • Put creepers away so that others do not trip over them
  • The overhead doors turn the heat off when open

2. Utilize safe procedures for handling of tools and equipment.

  • Block the wheels on rolling benches
  • Safely operate chain hoists and cherry pickers
  • Brake drum lathes
  • Tire balancer
  • Tire changer
  • Properly handle used oil and be aware of storage containers
  • Properly use hot water parts washer
  • Maintain mops and mop buckets
  • Properly use bench grinders and wear PPE

3. Identify and use proper placement of floor jacks and jack stands.

  • Choose the right jack for the right job, 10 ton jack for trucks, 2 ton jack for cars
  • Store jack stands in proper location
  • Safely use transmission jacks

4. Identify and use proper procedures for safe lift operation.

  • Safety precautions for the 30,000 lb. lift, this one has air operated safety locks
  • Safety precautions for the alignment lift
  • Safety precautions for all lifts

5. Utilize proper ventilation procedures for working within the lab/shop area.

  • There are two ventilation systems in the shop, learn how to use each one and remember to turn them off

There are several ventilation systems in the Collision bay, learn how to use them properly

6. Identify marked safety areas.

7. Identify the location and the types of fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment; demonstrate knowledge of the procedures for using fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment.

8. Identify the location and use of eye wash stations.

9. Identify the location of the posted evacuation routes.

10.Comply with the required use of safety glasses, ear protection, gloves, and shoes during lab/shop activities.

11.Identify and wear appropriate clothing for lab/shop activities

Expected Student Behavior

No cell phones are to be in use during class unless requested by Instructor. Students will be respectful of other classes being conducted in the building, respectful of their peers, and of the instructor.

Grading Criteria

 Each class day there will be a sign in sheet. Your final grade will be calculated on an average of your attendance, your participation in lab work, and an average of homework and quiz scores.

Classwork- 25%-homework, quizzes, etc

Attendance 25%- Being tardy will automatically count off 25 points on your attendance grade for the day, leaving early will result in a zero for the day.

Lab- 50%- Active participation in lab activities is a major part of your grade, you must be dressed appropriately to work safely on vehicles. Your willingness to work with others and maintaining a positive attitude is part of your Lab grade.

90-100=A

80-89=B

70-79=C

60-69=D

below 60=F

The Automobile.

Day 5,6,7 – Chapter 2 – automotive careers and certifications:

Objectives:

  1. List the most common types of automotive careers.
  2. Describe the skill needed to be an automotive technician.

Day 8,9,10 – Chapter 3 – Basic hand tools.

Objectives:

  1. Identify common automotive hand tools.
  2. List safety rules for hand tools.
  3. Select the right tool for a given job.
  4. Maintain and store tools properly.
