Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

• consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
• consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
• consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
• consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
  • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Course Description

The study of human cultures. Topics may include social organization, institutions, diversity, interactions between human groups, and ethics in the discipline.

Student Performance

After studying the material presented in this course, the students will be able to:

1. understand the fundamental ideas of cultural anthropology;
2. understand how cultural anthropologists gather and analyze information;
3. understand the relevance of anthropology in the modern world and what it has to say about social issues including terrorism, racism, the rise of nation-states; and the changing perceptions of sexuality and marriage;
4. understand ethnocentrism in themselves and others;
5. understand why there is such diversity and complexity in human behavior;
6. understand race and gender issues in new ways.

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

There will be a discussion question with each week's assignment.  You will be expected to answer the question and respond to the answers of at least two other people.  That means you will need to post 3 times for every Discussion question. The questions may be controversial and may challenge opinions you've held for a long time.  I expect you to be honest in your answers and that means there will be some disagreements.  However, I expect you to respectful of each other's thoughts and opinions.  There are no right or wrong answers.

Grading Criteria

Grading Schema

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 70-79

D = 60-69

F = 0-59

Your grade for this class will be based on completion of your weekly homework assignments, your weekly discussions, your quiz grades, and a field project.  Your homework and discussions will count for 40% of your grade.  Your quizzes will count for 40%, and your field project will count for the other 20%.  You'll have 5 quizzes, and I'll drop your lowest quiz grade. Information and instructions about the field project are on the Lesson page..  Your homework will consist of several questions on the assigned reading for the week.  Your grades on homework will depend on how well you answer the questions. There are no right or wrong answers on your discussion questions.  However, in order to get full credit, remember that you'll need to answer the questions and respond to the answers of at least 2 other people.  I want good responses, not just "I agree with you," or "I don't agree with you."  I also expect you to be respectful of each other's opinions in the discussion area.  You can disagree with someone without being disrespectful.  I encourage lively discussion and I expect you to disagree, but you have to be respectful.

Attendance

Students will be expected to log in to the course every week and to spend sufficient time online in order to do the following: 1) read the assigned online material; 2) answer questions about the assigned reading, and 3) answer a discussion question and respond to the answers of at least two other people.
