Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

A foundation studio course exploring drawing with emphasis on descriptive, expressive and conceptual approaches. Students will learn to see and interpret a variety of subjects while using diverse materials and techniques. Course work will facilitate a dialogue in which students will engage in critical analysis and begin to develop their understanding of drawing as a discipline.

ARTS 1316 Drawing I
A foundation studio course exploring drawing with emphasis on descriptive, expressive and conceptual approaches. Students will learn to see and interpret a variety of subjects while using diverse materials and techniques. Course work will facilitate a dialogue in which students will engage in critical analysis and begin to develop their understanding of drawing as a discipline.

Learning Outcomes (ACGM)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1. Describe visual subjects through the use of accurate and sensitive observation.
2. Generate drawings which demonstrate descriptive, expressive, and conceptual approaches.
3. Utilize varied materials and techniques with informed aesthetic and conceptual strategies.
4. Demonstrate an appropriate level of professional practice, including safety, craft and presentation.
5. Analyze and critique drawings verbally and/or in writing.
6. Relate drawing to design, art history and contemporary artistic production.
Specific Course Outcomes:
1. Students will demonstrate effective communication, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.
2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of the Visual Arts and Social Responsibility.
3. Students will gain familiarity with drawing terminology.
4. Students will work with a variety of drawing tools.
5. Students will be able to apply the Principles of Design to their drawings.
6. Students will apply a variety of techniques in drawing.
7. Students will solve visual problems and create dynamic compositions.
8. Students will utilize techniques emphasizing accurate, expressive, and conceptual approaches.
9. Students will discuss their work in verbal and/or written form.
10. Students will present work for grading in a professional manner, as directed by the instructor.
11. Students will participate meaningfully in critique.
12. Students will maintain a professional and respectful attitude.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are required attend class, be on time and not leave early. Stundents must give attention, follow directions, meet deadlines, show professionalism, discipline, courtesy, respect, participation, and cooperation.

Grades will be posted as a percentage of 100 (100% is perfect), and as a letter grade

A = 89.5% - 100%; B = 79.5% - 89%; C =69.5% - 79%; D = 59.5% -69%; F = 0% -59%
There will be drawing assignments, critiques, tests, journal reviews, and a group assignment.

 

Attendance

No more than 2 class periods may be missed without approval from the instructor. After two “free” absences, the final class grade will be reduced for each unexcused absence, and you will be advised by the instructor concerning continuing or withdrawing from the course.

Under special circumstances, students must contact instructor for opportunity to make-up attendance. Written documentation concerning reason for missing required deadline.

Calendar

1. There will be graded specific assigned drawings created during class time. The instructor will demonstrate, lecture with examples — as well as help during class time. There may be some homework.
2. Grades will be given for participation in critiques.
3. Tests will be taken online, based on the customized required textbook Steven Cost’s Drawing 1 (by Brian Curtis). Note page numbering is at the top of the textbook pages.
4. Drawing 1 students will be graded on their required participation in the Core Curriculum
Social Responsibilty Group Assignment in the form of a PowerPoint. This grade has twice the weight as the other grades.
5.Two grades are given for journaling and drawing in the sketchbook-journal (two reviews).
6. After two “free” absences, the final class grade will be reduced 3 points for each unexcused absence
7. Completion deadline dates will be announced in class.
