A study of the fundamentals of curriculum design and implementation in developmentally appropriate programs of children.
1. Define developmentally appropriate practices.
2. Describe the process of child-centered curriculum development.
3. Develop guidelines for creating developmentally appropriate indoor and outdoor learning environments.
4.Apply an understanding of teacher roles in early childhood classrooms.
5. Prepare a developmentally appropriate schedule including routines and transitions.
6. Select, plan, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children.

50% Curriculum Project:
Research and plan a two week "camp" for school age children. Time frame for 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday - Friday. Ages to cover - one group of Kindergarten Ages to 2nd grade and one group of 3rd to 5th grade.
Elements of Project:
Schedule for daily activities to last two full weeks to include activities, routines and transitions.
Plan for indoor spaces - room arrangements, centers, bulletin boards or wall spaces, to match the curriculum plans.
Plan for outdoor spaces - play yard arrangements, centers, signs, materials to match the curriculum plans.
Select and compile learning experiences for indoor and outdoor activities for both age groups that exemplify developmentally appropriate and educationally valuable goals. This will include lesson plans and materials lists for the two weeks of the project.
25% Essay - The Role of the Teacher
In this written response to the course project discuss the definition of developmentally appropriate practices. Include a reflection on the main project and the role of the teacher who uses a child-centered curriculum plan. Evaluate the growth of your understanding concerning how a curriculum grows and evolves as you gain knowledge and experience.
