Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

TECA-1303-001 Families, School and Community

Prerequisites

Course Description

A study of the child, family, community and schools, including parent education and involvement, family and community lifestyles, child abuse and current family life issues. Course content must be aligned as applicable with State Board for Educator Certification Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities standards and coincide with the National Association for the Education of Young Children position statement related to developmentally appropriate practices for children from birth through age eight. Requires students to participate in field experiences with children from infancy through age 12 in a variety of settings with varied and diverse populations. The course includes a minimum of 16 hours of field experiences.

Department Expectations

Learning Outcomes:  Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  1. Identify characteristics and issues relating to diverse cultures and caregiving lifestyles.
  2. Analyze ways in which factors in the home and community (e.g. parent expectations, availability of community resources, community issues) impact learning, including an awareness of social and cultural factors to enhance development and learning.
  3. Identify and apply strategies to maintain positive, collaborative relationships with diverse families (e.g.families with children with disabilities, poverty, single-parent, cultural, homelessness, dual-language learners).
  4. Investigate community/educational resources (e.g. dentist on wheels, library programs, GED programs, family education programs, Early Childhood Intervention Strategies) to empower families to support children’s development.
  5. Recognize signs of abuse and neglect and describe ways to work effectively with abused and neglected children and their families.
  6. Explain the importance of family involvement/home-school relationships in education.
  7. Explain the importance of maintaining codes of ethical conduct and legal issues when working with families, colleagues, and community professionals.

Student Performance

Performance - To satisfactorily complete this course the student will:

1. Attend the Class Meetings as indicated in the Weekly Schedule and Log in to the online course at least 1-2 times per week. Check mail messages and assigned Modules each time you enter.

2. Read the assigned chapters in the textbook and use accompanying resources; videos, power point presentations, etc.

3. Complete projects and assignments on time by due dates and in the proper place for online submissions.

4. Satisfactorily complete exams. All exams will be administered within the on-line course. Missing exam dates will result in an automatic zero on the exam unless prior arrangements are made. Exams must be submitted before the closing time or they will not be credited.

1. Examine literature on parenting styles and effective parenting techniques.

2. Discuss issues relating to families and communities and literature relating to diverse cultures and lifestyles.

3. Summarize ways to communicate and interact with parents and families.

  • Make up exams are at the instructor’s approval only and arrangements must be make prior to the exam. Miss one….you miss it!
  • Assignments not submitted in the dropbox provided in the course will not be graded or accepted
  • Late weekly assignments will be accepted with point deductions until a designated date near the end of the semester. Time management is an important skill. Complete assignments early each week and late work will not be an issue.
  • All documents need to be sent to instructor in  .rtf / .doc or .docx format

Observation Clinical Experience: 200 points   Due April 21, 2017                                     

  • Journal [200 points]: Students will be expected to complete a number of activities during their accumulation of clinical hours. Specifics are explained in detail in the online course found under the Lesson Tab.
  • Hours [No points / Pass or Fail requirement for course]: 16 clock hours of observation (activities, interviews, and tours as outlined in the journal explanation) are required for credit in this course by Texas state law. An Observation Log and detailed information is found online within the course under the Lesson Tab. DO NOT SUBMIT LESS THAN THE REQUIRED HOURS AT THE END OF THIS COURSE.
  • Students MUST complete Background History Check and Affidavit forms by the second week of the Course and submit to AC Lab School for approval to begin Clinical Experience. Students with one already on file and active  will be mailed within the first week of the course with approval from the instructor. DO NOT BEGIN CLINICAL UNTIL APPROVAL IS EMAILED TO YOU BY INSTRUCTOR!

Weekly Assignments : Videos / Case Studies /Web Activities: 200 points  

There will be assigned weekly activities associated with each chapter. There are 15 weekly assignments worth 13.33 points each for a possible total of 200 points.  These assignments help review content and extend the learning experience as well as assist in exam preparation.

There are five unit exams within the course. Each exam is worth a possible 100 points total. There is no final exam. Grades for each exam will be reviewed by the instructor before being posted. Please do not panic over your initial exam grade as each exam has to be graded by the instructor.  Instructor reserves the right to add curve points or not dependent on overall exam scores and/or test bank errors.
