Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Supplies

For the Math and Science Collection projects, you will prepare activities for use in your classroom The activities have to be teacher made -- no store bought activities allowed!  I want to challenge you to use as little money as possible in making your activities and become aware of the many items that you already have on hand to use. More details will be given in class.

Expected Student Behavior

  • Math & Science for Young Children is a hybrid course meaning that you will do most of your course work online and present your course projects in person.
  • Your participation in class and online helps you learn more and makes the class more interesting.
  • You need to schedule time during each week to complete your coursework as if you were attending an in person class weekly.
  • Feel free to ask questions --  I’m here to help you.
  • Honesty, integrity, and respect will guide this course.  You are expected to treat all participants with respect at all times.  In discussing controversial issues, it is important that students feel comfortable expressing their opinion, yet it is imperative that students refrain from using derogatory or offensive language.
  • Read assigned chapters, view the chapter power point presentations, and participate in discussion forums every week.
  • Complete weekly learning activities and exams over course content.
  • Attend the scheduled in-class meetings as indicated in the schedule and actively participate in discussions.
  • Complete the required projects and deliver the following presentations in class:
  • Create and present 10 math activities related to the 10 different concepts for young children.
  • Collect 20 items which would be developmentally appropriate for a science exploration center.
  • Plan and deliver a science activity lesson with related activities that is developmentally appropriate for young children.

 

Grading Criteria

Weekly Learning Activities and Discussion Forums = 25% of Final Grade
Unit  Quizzes = 20% of Final Grade
7 Major Section Exams = 25% of Final Grade
Math Project and Lesson Plans = 15% of Final Grade
Science Item Collection and Science Project with Lesson Plans = 15% of Final Grade

Grading Scale
A = 100 -- 90
B =   89 -- 80
C =   79 -- 70
D =   69 -- 65
F =    64-- 0

The online portion of the class will run from Tuesday afternoons through Monday evenings at 11pm.  That means, all course work for that particular module will be due at 11pm on Monday evenings.  I understand that life happens and there are emergencies that come up, however, you have been given adequate time to complete the homework, so please don’t wait until the last minute (Monday night) to start your homework for that module.

Discussion forums will not be available to post to after the date/time deadline.

Assignments and exams are due on the dates stated.

At the end of the semester, the lowest 2 learning activity and quiz grades will be dropped.

Attendance

  • 95% of the instruction will be online and then we will meet as a class on February 28, April 4, and May 2th from 5:30pm-8:45pm in the Allied Health Building #139 on West Campus where you will learn more about the Math/Science projects and then to present your final projects.

**If you do not live in the Amarillo area, you will be able to do your presentation on-line and not have to be in person to do that.  If this is the case, then please email me to make arrangements.  Don't worry...  there is a solution!

To satisfactorily complete this course, the student will:

  1. Read assigned chapters, view the chapter power point presentations, and participate in discussion forums.
  2. Complete weekly learning activities and exams over course content.
  3. Attend the scheduled in-class meetings as indicated in the schedule and actively participate in discussions.
  4. Complete the required projects and deliver the following presentations in class:
    • Create and present 10 math activities related to the 10 different concepts for young children.
    • Collect 20 items which would be developmentally appropriate for a science exploration center.

Keep in mind that grades are not given.  Grades are earned based on student performance.  Please note the requirements for earning the grade you desire and act accordingly throughout the semester.  If you complete the coursework in a timely fashion, there isn’t a reason for you not to successfully complete this course.
