Expected Student Behavior

Students’ well-supported opinions are an important element of this class.  Students should express their personal opinions in all written assignments, class discussions and presentations. However, it is important that students support their views and opinions with facts and logic.  An unsupported opinion is of no value in this class.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is vital.  Any acts of academic dishonesty will be penalized severely.  The instructor has a zero tolerance policy in regard to academic dishonesty.

Grading Criteria

Each student’s grade will be based upon his/her performance on each of the course sections.  The course has five sections as follows:

Discussion Boards (14)                      25%

Homework Assignments (13)             25%

Term Paper                                         10%

Mid Term Exam                                   20%

Final Exam                                          20%

Discussion Boards

Each chapter will have an associated discussion board. See separate document outlining the guidelines and expectations for discussion board participation on Blackboard.

Homework Assignments

All chapters will have an associated homework assignment.  Each assignment can be repeated as many times as desired.  The highest grade received on all of the attempts will be recorded.

Late Work

Students are expected to complete all work in a timely fashion. Assignments submitted after the due date and time will have a 25% late penalty added to the assignment grade.

Term Paper

Each student will complete a course term paper. Attention to detail and thoroughness of submission will be the primary goals.  Additional information concerning the term paper will be found in the Term Paper Folder of the Blackboard site.

Exams

This course will have a midterm exam, which will cover the material in the first section of the class and a final exam, which will cover the remaining material for the class. Each exam is designed to assess your comprehension of the material presented in the textbook.  Each exam will have multiple choice questions as well as short answer responses.

Make-up exams will be given for legitimate medical reasons only.  Travel for business or pleasure or lack of planning on the part of the student will not warrant a make-up exam.

Attendance

 Discussion Boards

One of the key educational outcomes in this class is that all students participate in the discussion boards and learn to represent their thoughts in written form. If possible, students should check the board daily, read the postings and make responses. Each student should check discussion boards regularly in order to stay current on the week’s discussion.

Be timely in your work. Once a discussion board is due, no further postings are allowed.

Discussion boards will be open until 5:00 p.m. on the Saturday of the week the discussion board is opened.

It is expected that students will have differences of opinion. These differences should be encouraged and openly expressed on the boards. However, please do so in a respectful manner. No personal insults or attacks will be tolerated. Always give your opinion and support for your thoughts. Do not be offended if someone disagrees with you. A good discussion should have variations in opinion and be an outlet for intellectual growth.

Every week there will be a new topic for discussion. Three comments, on at least two different days and with at least 24 hours in between the first and last postings, is the minimum posting for a passing grade each week. Further comments will increase the grade based on their quality and benefit to the discussion. For each discussion topic, each student must contribute comments. The first comments, which include the position and opinion of the student, should occur by midnight on Tuesday. Later in the week, students should comment on the positions and statements made by other students. All responses should contribute to the overall discussion and not just be a restatement of the original post.

For the initial posting, begin a new thread on the discussion board. In order to keep the discussion relevant, each person should post the initial comments prior to reading any posts from classmates. Later in the week, the student should comment on the postings made by fellow students within the thread for that student. Comments such as “I agree” or “Well said” or “Point taken” should be avoided. Students should also avoid restating their original post because only postings with new information or comments will receive credit. If the student agrees with the post, then indicate why there is agreement. All postings must have some detail and be specifically related to the week’s topic.

The discussion boards are intended to encourage critical thinking. As with all written work, please cite any outside sources used. Students are encouraged to make frequent, thoughtful, and meaningful contributions to each discussion. Students should always support positions and opinions with facts and logic, not feelings and hearsay.

Discussion board format is based on work originally created by Dr. Steven Palmer.
