Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Course Description

Diagnosis and repair of manual/electronic climate control systems; includes the refrigeration cycle and EPA guidelines for refrigerant handling. May be taught manufacturer specific.

Student Performance

End-of-Course Outcomes: Use safety procedures including proper refrigerant handling; explain the refrigeration cycle; and diagnose and repair systems. (Minimum Competencies)

 

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty of the department/program:

 

  1. Describe the theory of operation of electronic controls.
  2. Select and be able to perform the diagnostic procedures.
  3. Select and operate the proper refrigerant recycling equipment.
  4. Diagnose and repair the most common Freon compressors.
  5. Describe and be able to perform a leak test.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to evacuate and recharge the system.
  7. Be able to diagnose and repair an automatic air system.
  8. Be able to identify, diagnose and repair a dual zone system.

Attendance

There are 12 days of class in this course. Each day will be worth 9 points toward your final grade in combination with homework, lab and quiz grades. 4 absences will result in an F.

MODULE 1

 review of prerequisite class

HVAC

  Visually inspect a heating and air conditioning system and locate obvious troubles.

  Diagnose common heating and air conditioning problems.

  Describe the functions and uses of air conditioning test equipment.

  Locate air conditioning and heating system leaks.

  Explain how to replace major heating and air conditioning components.

  Describe the general procedures for evacuating and charging an air conditioning system.

  Demonstrate safe working practices when servicing heating and air conditioning equipment.

  Correctly answer ASE certification test questions about the diagnosis and repair of heating and air conditioning systems.

 

MODULE 2

  Heating and Air Conditioning: Task D-1 Diagnose malfunctions in the electrical controls of heating, ventilation, and A/C (HVAC) systems; determine necessary action.

  Heating and Air Conditioning: Task D-2 Inspect and test A/C-heater blower, motors, resistors, switches, relays, wiring, and protection devices; perform necessary action.

Heating and Air Conditioning: Task D-3 Test and diagnose A/C compressor clutch control systems; determine necessary action.

MODULE 3

  Heating and Air Conditioning: Task D-4 Diagnose malfunctions in the vacuum, mechanical, and electrical components and controls of the heating, ventilation, and A/C (HVAC) system; determine necessary action.

  Heating and Air Conditioning: Task D-5 Inspect and test A/C-heater control panel assembly; determine necessary action.

MODULE 4

  Heating and Air Conditioning: Task D-6 Inspect and test A/C-heater control cables, motors, and linkages; perform necessary action.

Heating and Air Conditioning: Task D-7 Inspect A/C-heater ducts, doors, hoses, cabin filters and outlets; perform necessary action

MODULE 5

  Heating and Air Conditioning: Task D-9 Check operation of automatic or semi-automatic heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) control systems; determine necessary action.

MODULE 6

Review all above tasks and on the last day take final Exam
