National Poverty Awareness Month

In honor of National Poverty Awareness Month, we wanted to highlight AC's Poverty Initiative, and some of the ways AC works toward helping our students achieve their academic goals, regardless of their financial situation.

AC's Theory of change

Removing a life barrier in an accelerated learning environment through a deep culture of caring = Completion. We love our students to success and help them achieve their educational and vocational dreams by:

  1. Loving our students
  2. Actively listening to our students
  3. Understanding our students
  4. Empowering our students
  5. Investing in our students

Loving the Student You Have

In loving the student you have, it is essential to know where they are in their lives and to meet them where they are. Our typical AC student (Maria) isn't your traditional college student. She faces many challenges and obstacles that could become a roadblock to achieving her educational goals.

No Excuses 2025

No Excuses 2025 is our commitment to every one of our students. From the time that they begin their educational journey, students will experience an equitable and affordable environment where they can develop skills to meet labor market demands or prepare for a smooth transfer to a 4-year institution. Our vision with No Excuses 2025, is to increase student completion rate to 80% by 2025 through the 5 following goals:

  • Increase Completion by improving persistence, decreasing time-to-completion, and creating a comprehensive transfer/completion pathway.
  • Align Degrees and Certificates with Current and New Labor Market Demand by creating structured Amarillo College career pathways. In doing so, this will help create economic diversification in the Texas Panhandle.
  • Increase Student Learning by infusing and scaling high impact teaching practices designed to align programs and courses based on competencies; improve student engagement; and, strengthen performance of student learning outcomes.
  • Equitable Degree and Certificate Attainment by building inclusive systems to increase minority hiring, enrollment, and completion.
  • Build Systems for Financial Effectiveness by creating innovative procedures supporting financial responsibility and fund-raising approaches.
