Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Supplies

Every student will be required to wear an approved AC logo shirt or a shirt with the company logo that the student works for, to both class and lab. Pants will be respectable and wore properly, waist up around the waist where they belong.  Safety glasses are the responsibility of the student and will be worn at all times while in the shop/lab environment. Clean up materials will be supplied as needed. Special tools will be supplied as needed. Safety shoes/boots, with slip resistance soles. Steel toes not required. No regular tennis shoes allowed.

Tools are not required to be brought to class by the student. Necessary tools and equipment are provided for in class use for assigned class and lab projects.

Tools are required for student employment during program and before graduation. Tool Purchase Opportunities with discounts at Sears, Mac, Snap-on and Western Equipment will be given and encouraged.

Cost for these tools and boxes average $1500.00 - $2000.00. You are responsible for purchasing these tools before graduation.

Required professional and safety attire is mandatory for class and laboratory participation.

Disciplinary action is at instructor’s discretion.

Student Performance

End-of-Course Outcomes:  Utilize specialized tools to diagnose or change parameters; read and interpret technical manuals; and identify and test sensors and actuator circuits.

An introduction to basic principles of electronics and electronic controls on Heavy Duty trucks. The student will utilize specialized tools to diagnose or change parameter; read and interpret technical manuals; and identify and test sensors and actuator circuits.

Lecture and discuss Textbook Chapters 5-12. ASE format multiple choice tests.

Lectures and hands on assignments help prepare students for the ASE Med/Heavy Diesel electronics tests.

Workbook and textbook Chapters 5-12 assignments to be finished and turned in for grading and review for test.

Utilize specialized tools to diagnose or change parameters; read and interpret technical manuals; and identify and test sensors and actuator circuits. (NATEF)

Use and understand the digital multi-meter. (NATEF)

Identify different types of circuits, how they are formed and how they function.

Demonstrate how a relay works and how it is used in circuits. (NATEF)

Explain the difference between analog and digital electrical components.

Identify different types of batteries and their applications. (NATEF)

Explain how an alternator works as a battery charging unit and identify the various circuits associated with an alternator. (NATEF)

Identify starting circuits and their components. (NATEF)

Perform voltage drop tests and understand what they are for and how to do them. (NATEF)

Demonstrate the fundamentals of CAN BUS, Multiplexing, OBD2 and ISO bus. (NATEF)

Identify the wiring schematic symbols and demonstrate how to read schematics. (NATEF)

Explain how micro-computers are networked and describe how they are used in equipment.

Demonstrate an understanding of J1587/1708 and J1939 information high ways.

Demonstrate the retrieval of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from the system of a piece of equipment and interpret what it is saying. (NATEF)

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

Maturity, honesty and respect is required and given.

As a participating student in Amarillo College Technical Programs, you will be expected to act, perform and train in a professional manner.

Compliance with the Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct is mandatory for class participation.

Students must come to class wearing the appropriate AC uniform shirt or a shirt with the company logo that the student works for.

Student MUST wear safety glasses in the shop/lab.

No cell phones are to be in use during class unless requested by instructor.

Students will be respectful of other classes being conducted in the building, respectful of instructor.

Students are expected to dress appropriately (shirts tucked in, no profanity on clothing, pants must be worn in the proper location (around the waist).

No head gear to be worn in building, except in shop, then must be worn  appropriately.

No tobacco or e-vape use on campus.

Grading Criteria

   

Final grade will be figured as Homework 13%, Test 12%, Attendance 40%, Job Work sheets 17%, and Shop/Lab 18%. 

All assignments will be turned in a timely manner for a grade or the student will receive a failing grade (F). 

            Shop/lab projects grade is at the instructor’s discretion.

Lose of points from being absent; tardiness and leaving early totaling 6 days will result in a failure grade.

Instructor holds the rights to add to the points or take points away, depending on student’s performance.

Student following of the Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct will be considered in the final grade.

Being absent more than 6 days will result in a failing grade, no matter what the students other grades add up to.

Attendance

Class attendance is mandatory and will effect final grade. Learning tricks of the trade will only come from attending lectures and hands on instruction.

Points will be taken off for tardiness and leaving early.


Loss of points from being absent; tardiness and/ or leaving early adding up to 6 days will result in a failing grade.

Being absent more than 6 days will result in a failing grade, no matter what the students other grades add up to.

Points taken off for tardy and early departures will be at instructor’s discretion. The points being deducted will be in a progressive manner. Where each time tardy or early leave the time from each will be added together and then the points will be figured from that.

Leaving without signing out is same as Early Departure Unexcused.

Signing out early without instructor’s permission is same as Early Departure Unexcused.

 Students must sign themselves in and out. Students are not allowed to sign another student in or out.

This schedule is a tentative outline of times and test.  These dates are subject to change dependent on speed of individual classes and informational transition to students.  If you plan on missing any days of instruction, your instructor must be given this information in writing, or E-Mail.  Failure to follow these instructions forfeits the student’s ability to make up work test outside of the instructors permission.

 Students are advised to have an afternoon job as a Diesel Technician helper at a local dealership or repair facility.
