Student Withdrawal Procedures

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Advanced study in the field of positron emission tomography and fusion technology.
 
END-OF-COURSE OUTCOMES
Explain the methodology of positron emission tomography and fusion technology; describe radiopharmaceuticals used and their patterns of biodistribution; identify required instrumentation and quality control measures; and outline associated patient preparation.
 
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
This course is a required major course for the Nuclear Medicine Technology major. The course is designed to provide the student with a practical knowledge of basic principles used in PET, CT, MRI fusion technologies.
 

COURSE GOALS/OBJECTIVES

The student should complete each of the following goals as evaluated by the faculty by using the course textbooks, personal notes, handouts, and other course materials deemed necessary.

  1. Learn the terms, facts, theories, principles, and procedures related to each major organ system.
  2. Apply knowledge learned within the classroom to the assigned clinical environment.
  3. Evaluate the learning experience based on quizzes, major exams, assignments, discussion board, classroom activities, outside activities.
  4. Learn basic radiation principles and safety precautions in regard to patient care.
  5. Review PET physics.
  6. Identify radiopharmaceuticals used in PET.
  7. Describe the uses of radiopharmaceuticals in PET.
  8. Describe design of PET scanners, dedicated and hybrid.
  9. Describe detectors used in PET.
  10. Describe data acquisition in PET.
  11. Describe how PET data is displayed.
  12. Describe quantitative information from PET image formation.
  13. Analyze the theory behind fusion technology in relation to image fusion.
  14. Evaluate x-ray physics and x-ray production from CT scanners.
  15. Evaluate CT image reconstruction and image data acquisition.
  16. Describe CT image display and CT imaging protocols.
  17. Differentiate the various planar orientations used in medical imaging; and identify anatomic structures viewed on medical images.

  18. 1. Name the anatomical structures located within the head and neck.
    2. Describe the relationship of each anatomical structure in the head and neck to surrounding structures.
    3. Describe the function of each anatomical structure in the head and neck.
    4. Locate each anatomical structure on CT, MR and ultrasound images in the transverse axial, coronal, sagittal and orthogonal (oblique) cross-sectional imaging planes.
    5. Name the anatomical structures located within the thorax.
    6. Describe the relationship of each thoracic structure to surrounding structures.
    7. Describe the function of each anatomical structure located within the thorax.
    8. Locate each anatomical structure of the thorax on CT, MR and ultrasound images in the transverse axial, coronal, sagittal and oblique imaging planes.
    9. List and describe the function of each anatomical structure located within the abdomen and pelvis.
    10. Describe the relationship of each anatomical structure in the abdomen and pelvis to surrounding structures.
    11. Locate each anatomical structure of the abdomen and pelvis on CT, MR, PET and ultrasound images in the axial, coronal, sagittal and oblique planes.
    12. Name and describe the function of each anatomical structure located in the upper and lower extremities.
    13. Locate each anatomical structure in the upper and lower extremities on CT and MR images in the transverse axial, coronal, sagittal and oblique planes.

     

  19. Pass all major exams and other graded assignments with final passing grade of C or better.

Expected Student Behavior

MAKE-UP POLICY

If a student is absent on the day of a major exam, the work will be graded as follows:

  1.  In order to be fair to students who take scheduled exams at the designated time, makeup exams will lose 15% of the original value. The second missed exam is 20%, the third 25%, and so on. 
  2. Major exams must be made up within one school day.

NOTE:  Other arrangements may be made with instructor’s permission on a case-by-case basis.  It is the sole responsibility of the student to communicate the need for other options regarding make-up policies.

WITHDRAWAL DEADLINE

The last day to drop or withdrawal is provided on the college Web site.

NOTE:  Nuclear medicine technology students who withdrawal from this course will be delayed in completing the major components on the AAS degree in nuclear medicine.

 ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  It is the responsibility of the student to attend class so that learning objectives are met successfully.  Although this is a hybrid class, prompt arrival is expected for exams and classroom time.  Attendance will be recorded.

 PHONES/PAGERS/LAPTOPS/OTHER TECHNOLOGICAL DEVICES DURING ONLINE TESTING

Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed during online testing. Only the computer on which you are taking the exam, a calculator, a pen pr pencil, and one pice of scratch paper are allowed in your in home testing area. Student must complete an environment scan including both sides of the paper at the beginning and end of the scan. No other humans may be in the testing area with you. 

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

In order to meet course requirements, any student, who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements.

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE

A student who may have concerns or problems with the course or course instructor should make every attempt to resolve the problem with the course instructor.  In the event that it is not successful, the student may appeal the decision of the instructor to the program director, then the chairperson of the Allied Health Division, the Dean of Instruction, and the College President, in that order.

THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT IS ONLINE

Mutual respect is foremost in this online classroom.  Please make yourself at home within the  online classroom, regarding your peers and instructors with utmost respect.

Students should feel free to express ideas/thoughts without making others in the online classroom feel uncomfortable.

 AC ONLINE COMMUNICATION

Use your personal account to check grades, emails, download course lecture material, etc. through BlackBoard. Students who are not prepared because they do not log onto BlackBoard to review modules, course material, assignment deadlines, and exam content will not be granted leniency.  

Students are responsible for checking their accounts daily so that communication about program/course information is current.

Students may also use any of the instructor contact information provided on the syllabus or classroom schedule provided each semester.

Since this is an online class, it is imperative that the student communicate with the instructor. Email is the best option. 

Grading Criteria

REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS
The course will consist of the following activities to be scored for course credit:
1. Major Exams-may contain previous semester content (70%)

2. Assignments/Quizzes and Discussion Board (30%)

NOTE:  Chapter objectives, key terms, and a study guide will be utilized and turned in by each student prior to each exam.  Failure to turn in chapter objectives, key terms, and a study guide will result in a drop in a letter grade (10 points) for each exam.

3. Final Exam (counts as major exam)

NOTE: The course content is comprehensive in nature so that students are expected to carry information from one semester to the next.  

4. A passing grade for each exam is expected.  If a student does not pass an exam, the student is assigned an "at risk score", prompting them to engage in mandatory remediation (review) for the exam that the student did not pass. The remediation must be completed prior to moving on to the next exam. If a second exam is not passed, the student may be assigned an automatic course grade of "F", and must enroll in the course at a later date, causing the student to not graduate on time. Remediation is due within 48 hours of the failed exam. 2% for each day, for each remediation, it is late, will be deducted from your overall final grade. 

5. NO ROUNDING 

6. Students shall not discuss the exam contents to students who have not yet taken the exam, this is considered cheating.

7. If an assignment/discussion board/quiz is not completed in time for a grade (by the due date), the student shall receive a zero in the grade book, that is the grade unless arrangements have been made with the instructor at which it may be accepted for a reduced grade of 75 highest; regardless the assignment must still be completed and turned in and assessed (not for a grade, only feedback) in order to proceed to the exam and next assignment. All assignments must be completed in order to pass the course. If all assignments and exams are not completed it will result in an ‘F’ for the course and the student will have to repeat the course causing a delay in graduation.  Assignments are not for the instructors grading pleasure, it is because the content on the assignments will be on the national board exam and in the capstone course.

 

8. Copying and pasting from the notes I provide is not acceptable and will be considered as plagiarism. While certainly you may use the notes I provide to answer DB questions or use for any assignment, you must put it in your own words. You certainly may work together to complete assignments and answer DB questions, however, you may not turn in the same assignments by copying and pasting each others work. If you work together but break it down into your own words.  


FINAL GRADE EVALUATION
A= 94.5-100                 C=74.5-84.4
B=84.5-94.4                 F=less than 74.5
