Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) TECA-1303-001 Families, School and Community

Prerequisites

Course Description

A study of the child, family, community and schools, including parent education and involvement, family and community lifestyles, child abuse and current family life issues. Course content must be aligned as applicable with State Board for Educator Certification Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities standards and coincide with the National Association for the Education of Young Children position statement related to developmentally appropriate practices for children from birth through age eight. Requires students to participate in field experiences with children from infancy through age 12 in a variety of settings with varied and diverse populations. The course includes a minimum of 16 hours of field experiences.

Department Expectations

Learning Outcomes:  Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  1. Identify characteristics and issues relating to diverse cultures and caregiving lifestyles.
  2. Analyze ways in which factors in the home and community (e.g. parent expectations, availability of community resources, community issues) impact learning, including an awareness of social and cultural factors to enhance development and learning.
  3. Identify and apply strategies to maintain positive, collaborative relationships with diverse families (e.g.families with children with disabilities, poverty, single-parent, cultural, homelessness, dual-language learners).
  4. Investigate community/educational resources (e.g. dentist on wheels, library programs, GED programs, family education programs, Early Childhood Intervention Strategies) to empower families to support children’s development.
  5. Recognize signs of abuse and neglect and describe ways to work effectively with abused and neglected children and their families.
  6. Explain the importance of family involvement/home-school relationships in education.
  7. Explain the importance of maintaining codes of ethical conduct and legal issues when working with families, colleagues, and community professionals.

Student Performance

Performance - To satisfactorily complete this course the student will:

1.  Log in to the online course several time each week. Check mail messages and assigned Modules each time you enter.

2. Read the assigned chapters in the textbook and use accompanying resources; videos, , etc.

3. Complete projects and assignments on time by due dates and in the proper place for online submissions. This includes a 16 hour clinical assignment that is required to pass.

4. Satisfactorily complete quizzes by the due dates. All quizzes will be administered within the on-line course.

1. Examine literature on parenting styles and effective parenting techniques.

2. Discuss issues relating to families and communities and literature relating to diverse cultures and lifestyles.

Expected Student Behavior

Things to know and remember:

  • Respect and honesty will guide this course.
  • Work through Blackboard Tutorials found under Student Tab in AC Connect
  • Your participation in class helps you learn more, and makes the class more interesting.
  • Students are encouraged to ask questions and ask often.
  • Make up assignments are at the instructor’s approval
  • Late weekly assignments will be accepted with point deductions until a designated date near the end of the semester. Time management is an important skill. Complete assignments early each week and late work will not be an issue.
  • All documents need to be sent to instructor in  .rtf / .doc or .docx format
  • Check out Amarillo College’s Students Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Any student, who because of a disabling condition may require some special arrangement in order to meet course requirements, should contact disAbility services at 371-5436 as soon as possible.
  • If for some reason you are unable to complete this course, be sure to notify the instructor and the Registrar’s office before July 18, which is the last day to drop a class. Students must email instructor with drop request and explanation prior to this date and obtain the signature of the instructor.

Observation Clinical Experience:   The Completed Log Sheet Due December 4, 2017.                                    

  • Students MUST complete Background History Check and Affidavit forms by the first week of the Course and submit to AC Lab School for approval to begin Clinical Experience.  This must be a background check done by Amarillo College, even if you already  have one from your job. If on file and active, the instructor will email you.  DO NOT BEGIN CLINICAL UNTIL APPROVAL IS EMAILED TO YOU BY INSTRUCTOR!
