Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) COURSE MATERIALS: Textbook, dictionary, pens, pencils, notebook paper or notebook for note taking, access to a computer to complete assignments and review class material, access to a computer to complete content requirements. Access to film rentals and library materials are necessary for successful completion of this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is a general study of diverse world cultures.  Topics include cultural practices, social structures, religions, arts, and languages.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  1.  Demonstrate knowledge of common terms and concepts associated with the study of world cultures.
  2. Articulate an informed personal response and critically analyze works in the arts and humanities from various world cultures.
  3. Demonstrate awareness of multiple cultural perspectives by comparing and contrasting the cultural expressions of diverse world communities.
  4. Analyze various cultures to navigate diverse cultural spaces and recognize different world views.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of geography and the location of different cultural groups in the world.

Expected Student Behavior

Academic HonestyAll matters of academic dishonesty including plagiarism (the act of copying and pasting information from one source and inserting into a paper without proper citation, rewriting information from another source and inserting into a paper without proper citation, copying and rewriting from another student’s work and using as your own), collusion, fabrication, cheating etc. will result in a failing grade for the assignment in question.

• All violations will be forwarded to the proper college authorities for review. Any form of disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

Any material that is copied and pasted from a web source into assignments, analyses, and essays without proper citations or documentation will be considered plagiarism or stealing and will receive a failing grade.

Classroom Rules and ExpectationsAll students are required to practice courteous, respectful, cooperative behavior at all times. To avoid distractions in the classroom, students will arrive on time and stay until class is dismissed.  Be prepared to stay on task. 

Cell Phone/ Personal Computer Policy:  In order to not interrupt the class session, students are asked to turn off all cell phones and pagers prior to the beginning of class.  Inform the instructor before class if you are on emergency call or of any special circumstance that may require your communication. Personal computers are to be used strictly for notes and accessing course material. Improper use of cell phones and personal computers during class time including checking personal e-mail, personal web pages, texting and other course work not pertaining to the World Cultures class will not be tolerated and students will be asked to leave the class. 
 

Accessing AC Connect: It is the responsibility of the student to check email messages, announcements and the course information using AC Connect. Student will submit all assignments and analyses using AC Connect unless noted on the assignment or by the instructor.

Email and Online Etiquette and Behavior: All students are expected to be polite, considerate and professional when posting opinions and thoughts in an email or in the Discussion Forum. Students posting or emailing aggressive, insulting, or inappropriate use of language or opinions will not be tolerated and will be considered a violation of Student Behavior as state in the AC Student Handbook. Violations will result in a failing grade for the course and will be forwarded to the proper college authorities for review.

Grading Criteria

Grading Criteria: It is the student’s responsibility to complete all assigned tasks by the specified due date. Individual assignments are evaluated by the instructor. Students are expected to complete all requirements with no less than 75% accuracy. Incomplete assignments, analyses, participation attendance concerns will be reported to specific department chairs, division chairs, and Associate Vice President of Instruction.

Assignments and Analyses will be written in the MLA format with proper college level writing and skills Text messaging or shorthand text will not be accepted. All research will be properly cited within papers as well as a bibliography or work cited page. Assignments will be attached as saved documents in docx, rtf, or pdf formats, all other formats including wps, odt, or .pages are not allowed as they cannot be opened by college computers for grading. Written or copied information for assignments posted in the “Comment” box will not be accepted and will receive a zero for the assignment.

All assignments and online discussions will be submitted before 11:00 pm; late submissions for assignments will not be allowed due to the short semester.

GRADING:

Weekly Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes and Final Exam: 50%

Students will complete weekly readings, memorize terms, participate in discussions in-class and online forums, and complete quizzes and short written assignment in-class based on films (in-class and content folders) and media

Research Essay and Power-point Presentation, In-Class Group Presentations: 50%:

Online Quizzes Weigh 6.667% Each x 3 = 20% 

Poverty Comparison Essay Weighs 10%

Final Power Point Presentation Weighs 7%

Final Paper Weights 13% 

Students will research specific information on topic and write a 1,000 – 1,500 word essay, MLA and rtf format

Students will create a 5 slide power-point presentation for class outlining the key points on the topic based on the research for the essay

Students will participate in a group discussion on their specific topic and present results to class

79.50 – 89.49 B
69.50 – 79.49 C
59.50 – 69.49 D

Attendance

ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR HYBRID SECTIONS:
It is the student’s responsibility to access the course online and complete all Assignments, Analyses, Discussion Forums, Quizzes, and Essays according to the course calendar. Students are expected to access the online course every day to complete all requirements according to the set due dates.

Attendance is crucial for your success in this course and you are required to be in class. Attendance will be taken every class. If you attend EVERY class meeting held during the semester, 2% will be ADDED to your FINAL GRADE average.

Students who have absences totaling 4 or more of classes will have 3% DEDUCTED from their FINAL GRADE. Excessive absences totaling 6 or more classes will be subject to a 5% DEDUCTION from their FINAL GRADE. Please communicate with instructor if you have any emergency which prevents you from attending class or classes as legitimate emergencies may be exempt from this policy. Students who are late to class will be considered absent at the instructor’s discretion.

You must physically attend class before the Census date of Monday, October 30th (10/30/2017) to avoid an automatic withdrawal from the course.
Final Date to Withdraw from the Course without a Failing Grade: Wednesday, December 6th (12/6/2017)

Students will submit all assignments and analyses using AC Online unless noted on the assignment or by the instructor. Emails to the instructor must be through AC Connect and Blackboard.
