*Minimum Speed Requirement = 40 words per minute
An important element of this intermediate keyboarding course is obtaining a keyboarding speed of 40 words per minute, with 5 or fewer errors, on a 5-minute timed writing assessment. This is a benchmark that truly defines success in this course.
Students enter intermediate keyboarding with an expected minimum speed of 30 wpm. And, it is reasonable to expect yourself to improve speed and accuracy by 10 wpm over an 8-week course—with daily practice, speed and accuracy improvements develop steadily at this level.
Your grade is impacted significantly and you risk a failing grade if your work does not include a timed writing speed of 40 words per minute by the end of the course.
Attendance
Attendance is taken each class period. 100 points are earned for attendance; 0 points are earned for non-attendance. Arrival more than 15 minutes late is considered an absence. The lowest attendance grade will be dropped from the attendance grade calculation. Attendance represents 5% of the reported course grade.
Teamwork
Each week we will have an in class group activity, simply to encourage working together. The activities are low-key and designed to practice skills or have fun. Teamwork represents 5% of the reported course grade.
Warmups
Each week (Weeks 1-8) you will type two sets of words, repeating each set 5 times. The first set represents commonly used words in the English language. Learn to type these words quickly and, because they frequently appear in written text, your speed increases. The second set represents frequently misspelled or miskeyed words. Learn to type these words consistently and accurately, your speed increases. Warmups are to be completed on two different dates, uploaded as an attachment to a dropbox. Points are awarded based upon completion of each twice weekly warmup (50 points per completion; 100 points possible per week). Warmups represent 5% of the reported course grade.
10-Key Practice
Each week (Weeks 1-8) you will practice 10-key data entry. This is a beginner-level introduction to proper finger placement for the 10-key pad. Each lesson will take approximately 1-5 minutes to complete depending on your keystroke speed. A lesson will be repeated twice each week, completed on two different dates, with proof of completion uploaded to a dropbox. Points are awarded based upon completion of each lesson (50 points per completion; 100 points possible per week). 10-Key Practice represents 5% of the reported course grade.
Behavioral Interview Question
Each week (Weeks 1-7) you will answer a behavioral interview question, uploading your answer to the appropriate dropbox. Points are awarded based upon a thorough answer, using the STAR method, that meets formatting guidelines. Each submission is worth a maximum of 100 points. Behavioral Interview questions represent 10% of the reported course grade.
Timed Writings
Timed writings are conducted each week (Weeks 1-8). Speed, as well as accuracy, are important elements when considering timed writings. Depending on the week, 2-4 timed writings are completed each week. Timed writings are 5 minutes in length and are completed within McGraw-Hill's Gregg Document Processing (GDP) online training system.
Intermediate Keyboarding students are expected to complete the course keying at a minimum speed of 40 words per minute, with 5 or fewer errors, on a 5-minute timed writing. Two different grades are impacted by your timed writings: the speed of keying (15% of the reported course grade) and degree of improvement (15% of the reported course grade).
Timed Writing Final Speed
50+ wpm with 0-5 errors = 95
45-49 wpm with 0-5 errors = 85
40-44 wpm with 0-5 errors = 75
31-39 wpm with 0-5 errors = 65
Under 30 wpm with 0-5 errors = 55
WPM Improvement
Improvement of 10+ words per minute with 0-5 errors = 95
Improvement of 8-9 words per minute with 0-5 errors = 90
Improvement of 6-7 words per minute with 0-5 errors = 85
Improvement of 4-5 words per minute with 0-5 errors = 80
Improvement of 1-3 words per minute with 0-5 errors = 75
No wpm improvement; minimum 30 words per minute with 0-5 errors = 70
Keying less than 30 words per minute with 0-5 errors = 65
Keying errors exceed 5, regardless of speed = 60
Lessons
Lessons are multiple and grouped tasks completed in McGraw-Hill's Gregg Document Processing (GDP) online training system. Each lesson will require 45-60 minutes to complete, depending on your keying speed and accuracy. Documents provide multiple attempts to correct typographical errors and missteps. Depending on the weeks, 1, 2, or 3 lessons may be required. Lessons must be fully completed to earn points; 100 points are earned for a corrected and complete lesson; 0 points are earned for error-filled or incomplete lessons. The lowest lesson grade will be dropped from the grade calculation. Lessons represent 25% of your final course grade.
Final Exam
The Final Exam will be presented during the final two class sessions (12/11 and 12/13). The Final Exam represents 15% of the reported course grade.
Attendance is taken each class period. 100 points are earned for attendance; 0 points are earned for non-attendance. Arrival more than 15 minutes late is considered an absence. The two lowest attendance grades will be dropped from the attendance grade calculation. Attendance represents 5% of the reported course grade.
