I expect you all to attend class, participate in class, be prepared for class, and respect everyone else who is the classroom. No cell phones. If you are waiting on an important call you must talk with me before class so I am aware. If you decided to leave the classroom to answer the phone please do not return. If you leave and come back, you have interrupted my class twice and that is unacceptable. NO texting! If it is so important that you have to text right away, you may leave and please do not return.
If you do miss class it is your responsibility to get the material you missed. I will be giving assignments during class that will be due the next class so if you miss you will miss that assignment unless you contact me or someone else in the class. It is your responsibility!!
Each student is expected to engage in academic honesty and refrain from cheating and/or plagiarism. All students are expected to be tolerant and respectful of other students. There will be zero tolerance for any type of harassment!! I want this to be an environment everyone can learn and feels safe!!
In order to maximize the group’s learning, some basic guidelines for the class are helpful. The following issues rarely occur in class. However, it is helpful for us all to be clear about my expectations in order to prevent any misunderstanding.
Turn all cell phones to silent before class. Do not text during class. It is distracting and sends the message that you are not present for our discussions. Like texting, people can get lost in their email, messaging, and internet and not be involved in the class and the discussion in the class. If you are texting or emailing during class time you are not actively engaging in class, and you're course grade is sure to suffer.
2. Please do not bring children to class. In the past, this issue has caused resentment from other students because the children were distracting. Students report that they could not concentrate on the discussion.
3. When a student has the floor, please do not have side conversations with other students. I believe it is disrespectful to that student who has the floor. And, other students in the group report that they feel resentful because they are distracted by the side talking and cannot focus on the student who is speaking.
4. I will do all I can to make sure each class ends on time, but I need everyone else’s cooperation to do this. Please arrive to class on time, if not a few minutes early.
How do I calculate my grade in the course?
Remember, the exams are worth 40% of the course grade, chapter assignments are worth 35% of the course grade, attendance and participation are worth 10% of the course grade, and service learning project is worth 15% of the course grade. Blackboard will keep a total of your course grade for assignments and exams that have been completed.
Final Grades
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = 0-59
Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. It is the responsibility of the student to attend class. If a student does not attend class in the first week of class, they will be dropped from the course administratively. Attendance will be worth 10% of your final grade in this course.
It’s college; I know you want to skip, but if you just show up you will do better in the class. I will take attendance during the semester worth points each time. If you are more than 20 minutes late then you will not receive the points. I understand that things come up, but please try your best to be in class and be on time.
