Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Study of the concepts and principles necessary to perform basic nursing skills for the adult patient; and demonstrate competence in the performance of nursing procedures. Content includes knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

Civility Statement

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning.  In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class.

Medical Insurance Coverage

The Affordable Act requires that all U. S. citizens and legal residents have medical insurance coverage. If accidental injury occurs, students are required to file a claim with their personal insurance company. The Hartford insurance policy, currently in place at Amarillo College, is an accident policy that provides coverage over and above any other valid and collectible insurance held by the student. 

 

Grading Criteria

  

Grading Criteria/Grade Scale:

The following criteria will be used to determine your grade:

  1. A-90, B-80-89, C-75-79, D-60-74, F- 59 and below.There will be no rounding of grades. Example: a 79.8 will a "C" and not a "B".
  2. NURSING LABS:  50% of the course grade will come from the Nursing Skills Competency Checklist grades. For satisfactory completion of any skill on the FIRST attempt, the student will receive 100 Points for that skill.  For satisfactory completion of any skill on the SECOND attempt, the student will receive 75 Points for that skill. For unsatisfactory completion of any skill after the second attempt, the student will fail the course. The student must have satisfactory completion of ALL skills to pass the course.  NOTE:  The student must be present for all graded skill labs unless an excused absence is approved by the course instructor.  If the student misses the graded skill lab without instructor approval, the student will forfeit their first attempt and the highest grade that can be earned on this skill is a 75. Any missed skill must be made up within one (1) week.
  3. SPEC: 25% of the course grade will come from the Skills Performance Evaluation of Competencies (SPEC). 
  4. Online Activities: If the online activity is not satisfactorily completed prior to the corresponding skill practice, the student will receive a 75 for the corresponding successful Return Demonstration.
  5. Final Exam:  25% of the course grade will come from the Final Exam.

Nursing Skill Make-up:

It is the student’s responsibility to reschedule make-up of the skills demonstration. Any make-up demonstration MUST be rescheduled and completed within one (1) week after the missed skill. If not demonstrated successfully, the second attempt must be completed within two (2) weeks after the missed skill. 

Attendance

  Regular attendance is required. Less than 90% attendance may result in failure of the course.

Week Five: Return Demonstration Vital Signs and Oxygenation PRE-LAB DUE 

Week Six: Lecture- Nasogastric tube insertion, decompression, and irrigation with PPE

Week Seven: Return Demonstration NG tube insertion and irrigation PRE-LAB DUE

Week Eight: Lecture-NG tube gavage and removal with PPE

Week NIne: Spring Break

Week Ten: Return Demonstration NG tube gavage and removal PRE-LAB DUE

Week Eleven; Lecture- Sterile gloving and foley catheter insertion 

Week Twelve: Return Demonstration Sterile gloving and catheter insertion PRE-LAB DUE

Week Thirteen- Lecture- Sterile Central Line Dressing Change

Week Fourteen: Return Demonstration Central LIne Dressing Change

Week Fifteen: Lecture-TED hose and enema

Week Sixteen: Return Demonstration TED hose and enema 

Final Exam WEEK

Additional Information

  Course Requirements

  1. Meet all requirements for admission into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
  2. Satisfactory completion of, or concurrent enrollment in:  BIOL 2401 (Human Anatomy & Physiology I) and RNSG 1301 (Pharmacology in Nursing) is required.
  3. Concurrent enrollment in RNSG1309 (Introduction to Nursing) is required. Both courses (RNSG1309 and RNSG 1105) must be taken together. IF one has to be repeated, both must be repeated.
  4. Satisfactory grade of 75% or above on all nursing competencies plus a 75% or above combined course grade of Nursing Process Worksheets, nursing competencies, and Final Exam.
  5. Classroom attendance of 90%.
  6. Successful completion of all the Nursing Process worksheets, nursing competencies, and the Final Exam is a course requirement.
