Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) PHED-1301-020 Foundations of Kinesiology

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an introduction to human movement that includes the historical development of physical education, exercise science and sport. This course offers the student both an introduction to the knowledge base as well as information on expanding career opportunities.

Students enrolled in an educational program in preparation for obtaining certain occupational licenses are potentially ineligible for such license if the student has been convicted of an offense. For further information, please contact your advisor, the Legal Clinic, or the faculty member in charge of the educational program that you seek to enroll in. The further information you will receive will include notification to you of your right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from the licensing authority in order to clarify your particular situation.

Student Performance

By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the listed learning objectives with a minimum 70% competency level based upon regular participation in  moderate fitness activities and completion of required assignments. Also the student will:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of a good physical fitness and a wellness lifestyle.

2. Determine whether medical clearance is needed for safe participation in exercise.

3. Learn behavior modification techniques to help adhere to a lifetime fitness and wellness program.

4. Assess the health-related components of fitness(cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, muscular flexibility, and body composition).

5. Write exercise prescriptions for cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and muscular flexibility.

6. Analyze diet, and learn the principles that govern sound nutrition.

7.Discern between myths and facts of exercise and health-related concepts.

8. Demonstrate an understanding of various aspects of the field of Physical Fitness And Sport

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to behave in a manner consistent with the  Amarillo College student code of conduct, and when applicable, Carter Fitness Center policies and procedures. 

CELL PHONES: Cell phones are only allowed to be used in class when on the silent mode. All phones may be monitored but not answered for social conversation.

Grading Criteria

1. QUIZZES- 30%- “Assess Your Knowledge” quizzes. One for each chapter- Ch. 1-9.

 

2. ATTENDANCE- 50%- See attendance policy

 

3. COURSE ACTIVITIES- 20%-

Students who do not finish the course and who do not formally drop the course through the Registrar’s Office will receive a grade of F.

 

 

MAKEUP POLICY:                          Contact instructor to make-up any missed assignments, classes or missed deadlines.

 

REQUIRED EXAMS:                       Nine total chapter exams.  One per chapter.

Weeks 1 – 16:  Attend activity portion of class during scheduled time
Week One:

Log onto the course, read e-mail from instructor and read orientation information.

Week Two:    Complete Pre-Activity Assignments
Weeks 3-15:

  Complete course activity assignments

  Complete Chapter quizzes

Week 16:   Complete Post fitness assessment.

 

Additional Information

STUDENT ID CARDS:

Students MUST use their AC College IDs to gain entry into Carter Fitness Center. Students are allowed three entries without IDs, after three no-card entries, you will not be allowed into the gym/class until a new card has been purchased.

LOCKER POLICY:

Lockers will be rented beginning at noon on the third class day of each semester on a first come first served basis.  Lockers must be paid for on a semester by semester basis because of the limited number of lockers available.  Lockers must be cleaned out by the announced due date.  Items left in the lockers after this time will be placed in the lost and found.  The center lockers may be used on a daily basis only with no fees.  All areas of the fitness center are available during the open times.

DISABILITY STATEMENT:  Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact disability Services (Student Service Center, room 119, phoine 371-5436) as soon as possible.
