Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Content includes health promotion, expanded assessment, analysis of data, critical thinking skills and systematic problem solving process, pharmacology, interdisciplinary teamwork, communication, and applicable competencies in knowledge, judgment skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework throughout the life span. This course lends itself to either a blocked or integrated approach.

Transition to Professional Nursing

Course Description:

Content includes health promotion, expanded assessment, analysis of data, critical thinking skills and systematic problem solving process, pharmacology, interdisciplinary teamwork, communication, and applicable competencies in knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework, throughout the lifespan.  This course lends itself to either a blocked or integrated approach (2 sem hrs; 6 clinical).

1.  Discuss an ethical-legal framework and applicable professional standards and requirements in caring for adults.

2.   Identify personal strengths to promote professional development in nursing.

3.   Summarize activities that promote the development and practice of professional nursing.

4.  Explain the role of the professional nurse in the promotion, maintenance and restoration of heath of adult patients.

Behavioral Expectations/Classroom Ground Rules:

See Associate Degree Nursing Student Handbook, Professional Conduct; American Nurses Association Code of Ethics; and Amarillo College Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning.  In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students.  Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may results in a request for the offending student to leave class.

Course Schedule/Outline:

Class calendar will be distributed the first day of class.  The final exam schedule will be posted at the beginning of the course.

Students who have a general education course exam which conflicts with a nursing exam may re-schedule their nursing exam on an individual basis with the consent of the appropriate nursing faculty and computer testing lab assistant.

Time Allotment:

Two credit hours: 2 hours lecture (32 hours per semester); 1 hour lab (16 hours per semester) for total of 48 contact hours. 

Teaching Strategies:   

Demonstrations, independent assignments, graphics, small group discussions, critical thinking exercises, lecture, case study analysis, computer tutorials, and simulated labs.

Teaching Personnel:

Associate Degree Nursing Faculty and guest speakers.                      

Course Requirements: (32 Hours – including testing time)

Concurrent enrollment in RNSG 1227 and RNSG 1261 is required.  Both courses must be taken and successfully completed in the same semester.  If a withdrawal, drop or unsatisfactory grade (failure) occurs in either RNSG 1227 or RNSG 1261; both courses must be taken concurrently during a subsequent semester and successfully completed to progress in the program.

  1. Completion of all assignments including homework, online case studies and specialty exams.  Students who do not take the Evolve specialty exam will not pass the course.
  2. Satisfactory completion of all laboratory components of the course.
  3. Completion of any assigned online discussions, evaluations and/or surveys.
  4. Attend at least 90% of classroom meetings (90% of the total hours for the classroom).
  5. A 75% (or above) combined average.  This means a 75% average of the combined scores from examinations (75% of grade) and final examination (25% of grade).

 Laboratory Experience: (16 Hours)

     1.  Demonstrate proficiency in lab competencies which may include, but is not limited to:

      a. Venipuncture insertion and management

      b. Piggy-back medication administration

      c. Changing a continuous intravenous infusion to a saline lock

      d. Phlebotomy

      2.     Completion of online case studies and/or patient reviews.

      3.     100% attendance is required.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Students must attend at least 90% of lecture, and 100% of lab.  Clinical absences may result in class failure unless special arrangements have been made.
