Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Anatomy and Physiology II is the second part of a two-course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including the following systems: endocrine, cardiovascular, immune, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive (including nutrition), urinary (including fluid and electrolyte balance) and reproductive (including human development and genetics). Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides a hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

Anatomy & Physiology II is the second part of a two course sequence.  It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including the following systems: endocrine, cardiovascular, immune, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive (including nutrition), urinary (including fluid and electrolyte balance), and reproductive (including human development and genetics). Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides a hands-on learning experience for the exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

Learning Outcomes:

1.Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe locations of major organs of each system covered.

2.Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue and organ functions in each system.

3.Describe the interdependency and interactions of the systems.

4.Explain contributions of organs and systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.

5.Identify causes and effects of homeostatic imbalances.

6.Describe modern technology and tools used to study anatomy and physiology.

7.Applu appropriate safety and ethical standards

8.Locate and identify anatomical structures.

9.Apropriately utilize laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, dissection tools, general lab ware, physiology data acquisition systems and virtual simulations.

10.Work collaboratively to perform experiments..

11.Denmonstrate the steps involved in the scientific method.

12.Communicate results of scientific investigations, analyze data and formulate conclusions.

13.Use critical thinking and scientific problem solving skills, including, but not limited to, inferring, integrating, synthesizing and summarizing, to make decisions, recommendations and predictions.

Expected Student Behavior

Grievance Procedure:  If a student is having a problem with the course policies, or with the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Biology Department Chairman (Dr. Richard Hobbs, the Dean of STEM (Dr. Buse), the Vice President of Instruction(Dr. Clunis ), or the college President (Dr. Lowery-Hart), IN THAT ORDER.

 

Cell phones:  Cell phones are not prohibited, however, please be considerate of others.  Please keep all cell phones on silent or vibrate mode.  If it is essential that you answer the call, please step outside the classroom to complete the call.  Absolutely no call shall be taken during a quiz, exam, or practical.  This will result in a grade of zero on that quiz, exam, or practical.

Plagiarism / Academic Dishonesty:  Academic dishonesty or plagiarism will not be tolerated in this class. Students caught cheating on a quiz, exam, or lab practical will be given a grade of zero on that assignment and referred to the Dean of Student Services (Mr. Robert Austin).

Special Notes:

This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.  Material included is intended to provide an outline of the course and rules that the instructor will adhere to in evaluating student's progress.  Student's are expected to read the textbook before and after the material is presented in the lectures.

 

Grading Criteria

A = 900 - 1,000 points, B = 800 - 899 points, C = 700 -799 points, D = 600 - 699 points, F = < 600 points

Lecture 55%, (550 points) and will include the following:

1. Six lecture exams, each worth 80 points.  One lecture exam will be dropped.  Total value of lecture exams will be 400 points.

2. 5-7 lecture quizzes, each worth 30 points.  One lecture quiz will be dropped.  Total value of lecture quizzes will be 150 points.

Laboratory 25%, (250points) and will include the following:

1. Three lab practicals, each worth 50 points for a total value of 150 points.

2. 5-7 lab quizzes, each worth 10 points.  One lab quiz will be dropped.  Total value of lab quizzes will be 50 points.

3. 5 case studies, each worth 10 points.  Total value of case studies will be 50 points.

Final exam 20% (200 points).  Final exam will be a minimum of 100 questions to a maximum of 200 questions and will be comprehensive.

No make-ups will be allowed.  Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed on an individual basis.  One lecture exam, one lecture quiz, and one lab quiz will be dropped.

Attendance

 

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.  Attendance will be taken until the census day (May 23, 2019), after that date attendance will not be taken.

A grade of W will be given for a student-initiated drop or withdrawal on or before June 19, 2019.  You may not drop or withdraw after June 19, 2019, without permission of the Biology Department.  You must petition the department, in writing, for evaluation of a late withdrawal.  This will be reviewed by the full-time faculty of the Biology Department.

Science Testing Center

All tests, excluding the Final Exam, will be taken in the Science Testing Center and may be taken during the normal Science Testing Center hours, day or evening.  Tests will be taken outside of class lecture time, and you will have a 72 hour window to take the tests.  Please note: No tests will be given out less than one and a half hours be the Science Testing Center closes.  You must present an Amarillo College student ID every time you take a test.  The Science Testing Center staff will retain your ID while you take your test and it will be returned to you when you turn in your test.

When using the Science Testing Center students should scan in and out with their Amarillo College student I. D.

Mandatory Tutoring:

Warren Hall 110

In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam) must complete a mandatory 60 minute tutoring session with his / her instructor or in the Science Enrichment Center before taking the next exam.

Appointments for the 60 minute tutoring are required and may be scheduled in the Science Enrichment Center or by calling 806-371-5536.

A record of tutoring form will be given to you when you complete 60 minutes of required tutoring.  You will not be allowed to take the next exam without the completed record of tutoring form.

 

Free Drop-in:

Peer tutors are available in the Science Enrichment Center.

 

Cheating:

Cheating will not be tolerated in any Biology course at Amarillo College.  On the first day of class, you will be required to sign and date a Course Contract.  Included in the contract is the following statement: “I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic “F” in the course.  This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to” the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones*, copying or leaving the Science Testing Center with a test or questions from a test.  Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test.”

You will not be allowed to take your tests in the Science Testing Center until this contract is signed and on file in the Science Testing Center.

*Please note: NO CELL PHONES is the Testing Room.  If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an “F” for the course
