Expected Student Behavior

Student Responsibilities:

Students are expected to be ON TIME, PREPARED for class, and PARTICIPATE during class in a positive manner.  Students are expected to read the syllabus and to sign and turn in a course contract before the first exam can be taken by the student.  Students are expected to attend each and every class period.  Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. Behaviors that are not supportive include, but are not limited to the following:  the use of cell phones, texting, making offensive remarks, talking, use of personal music systems, doing homework or other personal projects during class time, or engaging in any other form of distraction.  For a full discussion of appropriate behavior and student responsibilities, please refer to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook http://sites.actx.edu/catalog/notices/.  Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or Student Rights & Responsibilities will be subject to disciplinary action.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered in order to receive credit for a course. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and / or a tutor.

Food/Drink Policy AND Cell Phone/Pager Policy:

It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department that food and drink may be allowed in the classroom setting, at the instructor’s discretion, but food and drink are not allowed at any time in the computer labs.

It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department that cell phones and pagers should be turned off, or in silent mode, in the classrooms and in the computer labs.  If you must have your cell phone on in class, due to a true emergency situation, please notify your instructor of your emergent situation before the start of class.  If your phone activates during class, please step out into the hallway immediately with your phone, without talking, to minimize the disruption to the class and/or to the other students.

Grading Criteria

Homework

Homework will consist of online assignments. Online assignments will be submitted using MyMathLab and will be automatically graded on the website.  Details on how to register and enroll in MyMathLab will be given on the first day of class.  Assignments made on Tuesdays will be due by midnight on Fridays.  Assignments made on Thursdays will be due by midnight on Sundays.  Assignment due dates will be indicated in MyMathLab with each assignment set.  I do NOT accept late homework, however, I will drop the lowest online homework grade.

Group Work

Group work will be completed in class at the end of each section covered.  This is a good time to ask peers or myself any questions you may have.  I will drop one group work assignment.

Core Assessment

You will be given a core assessment assignment to complete at some time during the semester that will allow you to work on a more in-depth application of a topic we cover during this course.

Exams

Four major exams and a comprehensive final will be given.  No make up exams will be given, no matter the reason.  If you know in advance that you will be gone for an exam, you MUST make arrangements with the instructor to take the exam EARLY.  If an exam is missed, the grade will be replaced with the score you make on the final exam.  This policy applies to one exam only.  If you miss more than one exam, a grade of zero will be averaged for the other missed exams.  If you do not miss an exam during the semester, the grade on the final exam, if higher, will replace the lowest major exam grade.

In accordance with Mathematics Department policy, students scoring below a 70 on any major exam will be required to spend at least one hour in the Math Outreach Center.  This must be completed by the time specified by your instructor.

Final Exam

The comprehensive final exam will be given the last week of the semester.  If, after the last chapter exam, a student is making an A in the course, the student will be exempt from the final exam.

Grading Policy

The final course grades of A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), and F (below 60) will be computed as the mean (average) of the earned grades from:

  1. Homework = 15%
  2. Group work = 5%
  3. Exams = 60%
  4. Core Assessment Problem = 5%
  5. Your final exam grade = 15%

Attendance

Regular attendance is essential in a math class.  It is during class that questions about homework, new assignments, new announcements, and course content will be covered.

Please remember that the last day to drop any 6 week class at AC during the Summer II 2019 Semester is  July 31st, 2019.  Amarillo College has a drop policy requiring you to contact your instructor before you will be allowed to drop and get the necessary drop form.  If you stop attending class, and your average drops below a “60” due to missed assignments, and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an “F” for the course.
