Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Supplies

 Tools are provided by Instructor for in-class use in required shop and lab projects.

Tools are required for student employment during program and before graduation. Tool Purchase Opportunities with discounts at Sears, Mac, Snap-on and Western Equipment will be given and encouraged.

Cost for these tools and boxes average $1500.00 - $ 2000.00. You are responsible for purchasing these tool before graduation.

Safety Glasses are required on the first day of class and each time entering and or working in the lab-shop.

Amarillo College shirts, or Company provided are required each day for class, clean and tucked in.

 Leather Gloves required for attaching and removing high pressure air-conditioning manifold gage test hoses.

Student Performance

Advanced concepts in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Emphasis on systemic troubleshooting on Truck-Trailer mounted refrigeration, "Reefer" Equipment and limited exposure to Truck cab 134a air conditioning systems.

Perform advanced diagnosis using specialized testing equipment and procedures; evaluate components using visual and standard testing procedures; and reclaim and recycle 134a refrigerants using approved standards and equipment.

Lecture and discuss Chapters 12,13,14,15 and 16. Test is ASE format multiple choice. Discuss and take the ASE. Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling review and quiz for licensing purchase of Freon gases used in industry applications.

Utilizing N.A.T.E.F. competency’s in the class lab and shop lab and sign off sheets using competency profiles.

Lectures and hands on in class and lab assignments help prepare students for the ASE. Certification tests are given throughout the year on MED/HVY Diesel  A-7 heating and A/C and the ASE Freon Recovery air conditioning test.

End of course outcomes.. Basic PMI Service for trailer mounted refrigeration units and truck cab air-conditioning units, servicing of small Diesel engines, unit electrical systems and battery. Demonstrate safe working skills in the lab and understand inherent dangers and safety precautions when working on high pressure refrigeration systems. Understand basic concepts of major components of the refrigeration systems. Prepare for ASE. testing.

Shop assignments, hands on skills. PMI's performed on a trailer mounted unit. Students will demonstrate the ability to safely connect A/C gages and determine service valve positions.

Workbook Assignment over back of chapter review question chapter 12,13,14,15 and 16 to be turned in on the day of the test.

Outcomes and end of course objectives, sign off sheet due on last class day

Expected Student Behavior

 Safety glasses are required to be worn when in the shop and on Field trips to industry partners businesses and are required for the class.

Safety Glasses will be worn in the shop .. no exceptions. Students caught violating Amarillo College policy will receive an F and be asked to leave. This policy is to protect you and others while in the lab-shop area and is a requirement of OSHA and the employers in this field of study.

Maturity, honesty and respect are required and given.

Cleaning your work area each day before leaving is part of shop attendance-hands on skills participation grade.

Phones are to be off or left in vehicle during class.

Students must come to class wearing the appropriate Amarillo College shirts

Students will be respectful of other classes being conducted in the building, respectful of their peers, and of the instructor.

Students are expected to dress appropriately (shirts tucked in, no profanity on clothing, no holes in clothing) and clothing must appear to be laundered regularly.

Grading Criteria

Class will be separated into groups based on size and will be assigned to different specific engine projects.

50%- Average of your chapter and pop test grades includes workbook assignments to be turned in at time of Final Exam.

50% - Total grade for hands on completion of shop projects working as a group and Class Attendance.

Class attendance is required to pass..not just a test score.

A = 90 to 100  B = 80 to 89  C = 70 to 79  D = 60 to 69  F = Below 60

Students will be required to maintain a 75% or higher on their tests or be assigned 30 minutes to 1.5 hours of tutoring. Please ask questions about this! ...NOW...

Attendance

 Class attendance is mandatory and will affect final grade. Learning the Tricks of the Trade will only come from attending lectures and hands on.

Missing more than 3 class days will result in repeating the class and a failing grade. You can not teach yourself  with out the hands on practice and lectures.

  If a emergency arises contact your instructor at the phone #, e-mail or voice messaging system.

Missing the Final will result in a automatic F.

Friday  make-up days scheduled as needed for any class cancelations.

Calendar

 Classes are approximately 3+ weeks long and meet from 8:00am to approximately 2:00 pm depending on the number of breaks taken,  Per department policy, M, T ,W, Th.

Students are highly advised and encouraged to have an afternoon job as a Diesel technician helper at a local dealership or repair facility.

                          D.E.M.R. 2346-001 Is taught from..11-25-19 through 12-19-19

Module 1  Discuss chapter 13 and 14. Start end of chapter review questions 13 and 14.

  Day 1... Discuss syllabus and class objectives, discuss shop projects. Tour of lab and discussion of Reefers, Start lecture over chapter 13.

  Day 2 ...Continue lecture on chapter 13, start some shop work on reefer projects

  Day 3... Start lecture over chapter 14, tricks of the trade, shop projects.

Module 2  Continue discussing chapter 14 and start chapter 14 discussion. End of  chapter review questions due. 13-14. Work on Diesel refrigeration shop projects. 

  Day 4 ... Chapter 14 discussion, answer questions and review chapter 13 and 14 for up coming test, shop assignments.

  Day 5 ... Test over chapter 13 and 14, Take home chapter 15 test handed out and instructions given... Reefer shop projects.

  Day 6 ... Start home work on chapter 15 and view power points,... Blackboard power points and supplemental material online.                   

  Module 3  Discuss chapter 15, start chapter 15, discuss ASE test and expectations.

  Day 7 ... Discuss chapter 15.. work on shop projects Start chapter 15 discussion....

  Day 8... Chapter 15 take home test due. . Field trip...Chapter 15 lecture, . Discuss shop projects. Answer questions

  Day 9.... Finish discussion on chapter 15, work on shop projects. ASE refrigerant exam discussion and book given out .

  Day 10 ... Discussion on chapter 16, Shop projects.

Module 4  Test on 16 and 17, end of chapter review questions for 16 and 17 due.

  Day 11  Finish discussing chapter 16. Shop projects

  Day 12  Start chapter 16-17 review for final test on Tuesday, shop project wrap ups start

  Day 13  Test over chapter 16 and 17. End of chapter review question 15-16 due at this time

  Day 14   Shop projects completions, wrap-up, Shop clean up and moving projects.. ASE exam and discussion testing due...Last class day.

 Final test on Chapter 16-17 is Wednesday December 18th, 2019

                       Last class day is 11-19-2019.  Competency profile due.

Field trips and guest speakers are scheduled through out the class... lectures, tests except Finals are subject to change.

                                                          

 Missing any of the major tests, by test reporting day will result a failing grade.
