Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

Supplies

In order to maintain compliance with Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 97, Subchapter B, rule §97.64 all immunization documentation must  be on file with the EMSP program office WITHIN 10 DAYS of the first class session. Failure to meet this requirement will result in dismissal from the class. Refunds are subject to Amarillo College policy. These immunizations include:

  1. Tetanus-diphtheria within 10 years
  2. Measles (two doses) (preferably MMR vaccine)
  3. Mumps (preferably MMR vaccine)
  4. Rubella (preferably MMR vaccine)
  5. Hepatitis-B Immunization (3-injection series requiring 4-6 months for completion)
  6. Varicella (chicken pox)

In addition, area clinical sites require:

  1. Proof of a negative Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test (within the last year) is required.
  2. Influenza (if your clinical rotations occur during flu season: October to May)

MOREOVER:

  • Specific clothing will need to be purchased prior to attenting clinical rotations - some of which you may already own. A detailed description will be provided in class (shoes, belt, pants, shirt, name badge, etc).
  • As a requirement of the clinical sites, a background check must be completed prior to clinical rotations. Cost - approximately $55
  • Clinical scheduling website access: approximately $17

Student Performance

Learning Outcomes: As outlined in the learning plan, apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry.

In addition, detailed instructions will be provided to the student concerning the types and number of clinical shifts needed (48 hours total).

It is the responsibility the STUDENT to ensure they have completely followed their instructor's directions.

FAILURE TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE 24 HOURS IN AN EMSP ASSIGNED EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT, AND 24 HOURS ON AN EMSP ASSIGNED AMBULANCE, WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF BOTH THE CLASSROOM AND CLINICAL COURSES.

Also, attending a clinical shift in an incorrect area or department will result in failure of both courses! Emergency Departments and Ambulances are the only sites needed for an EMT-Basic student.

Any questions or concerns about your schedule must be brought to your instructor AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR to your shift to avoid catastrophic consequences in both the classroom and clinical courses!

Expected Student Behavior

It is the student’s responsibility to become familiar with the Student’s Rights and Responsibilities Publication.

Students will be required to abide by the Student Code of Conduct which can be found in the Student's Rights and Responsibilities link above.

Clinicians may ask students to leave the clinical setting at any time. Whether the student is permitted back into the clinical department will be determined after meeting with department heads. A student banned from a clinical site may result in an "F" for the course.

The clinical sites are generally TOBACCO FREE. As such, the USE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS on clinical rotations IS PROHIBITED!

SEPARATION OF ROLES:

In response to Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 157, Subchapter C, Rule §157.36, students MUST NEVER attempt to gain clinical experience outside an EMSP assigned clinical shift. At no time, while gaining clinical experience, may a student be considered operational staff or crew; paid or otherwise.


Grading Criteria

Grading criteria is provided in the EMT Handbook required for EMSP 1501.

The clinical (EMSP-1163) letter grade will be the same as the student's EMSP 1501 classroom, letter grade - provided clinical rotations are successfully completed as evaluated by EMSP program faculty and the clinicians assigned for each clinical shift.

Failure to successfully complete the clinical course also constitutes failure of the classroom (EMSP 1501) course.

Should a student miss a clinical day, an attempt to reschedule may be made at the discretion of program faculty. However, any rescheduled clinical day WILL NOT be at the students convenience. The earliest possible day will be reassigned.

Missing a clinical day may result in an "F" for the course! This includes the classroom portion of this class (EMSP 1501).

Attendance

Attendance is mandatory. Clinical space is limited and reserved well in advance of the start date of this course. Missing an assigned clinical day may result in failure of the course.

A "perfect" clinical schedule (from the student's perspective) is not guaranteed; however, all reasonable efforts will be made to get the student into the clinical setting.

Clinical shifts are selected from a commercially owned scheduling web site described in class. After a student has access to the site, clinical shifts MUST be chosen and completed as expeditiously as possible. Attempting to choose a schedule late in the semester will likely result in an inability to create an appropriate schedule. Failure to successfully complete clinical rotations will result in an "F" for both courses (EMSP 1163 & 1501)

Extra shifts are not permitted as space is limited.

Calendar

Clinical dates are chosen online by the student from a commercial website. Access costs approximately $17 and is described by the course instructor.
