Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisite: Audition or instructor consent

Course Description

One 60-minute lesson per week, minimum 10 hours of outside practice per week required. For music majors, in their major area of performance. Emphasis on development of technique, musicianship and extensive repertoire from contrasting historical periods.

Practice rooms are available, located in Concert Hall south hallway; any rooms that are unlocked and contain a piano are available for individual practice.
Recital Attendance serves as weekly lab for this section; additional studio meeting times are at the discretion of the instructor.

Student Performance

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:

1)  Perform six songs or arias using piano accompaniment.

2)   Must use correct diction in all languages.

3)   Must be prepared to sing the major and minor scales and other scale forms depending on literature assigned.

4)   A vocal notebook is to be turned in at the end of the semester with complete understanding of the translation of the song and knowledge of the composer and the student’s own interpretation.

5)   Attendance in studio class is mandatory once a week.

Expected Student Behavior

Be prepared for every lesson!

Minimum of 2 hours per day of practice, or 12-15 hours per week.

Attend studio class weekly.

Work on Rosetta Stone software for foreign language study.

Grading Criteria

Based on performance in class, notebook, attitude, and jury grade, the student will be graded accordingly. Final grade will be based on the following scale:

A=90-100%
B=80-90%
C=70-80%
D=60-70%
F=Below 60%

Each lesson is graded.  The final exam is determined by a performance jury performed in front of the entire music faculty.  All literature must be presented and memorized.  the student is allowed one selection of their choice and the faculty chooses the remainder.  Notebook Examination, attitude/desire, and jury grade will also be considered. 

Three missed lessons lowers grade by 1 letter. 

Must call and leave a message if you will not be present at a lesson; make-up lessons are at the discretion of the instructor. 

Attendance

Must call and leave a message or email me at office if you will not be present, otherwise, lesson is unexcused.

Student is allowed only 1 unexcused lesson per semester.

 

Calendar

Lesson times will be assigned during the first week of the semester.  Lessons will begin either during the first week of school, or during the second week of school if not scheduled prior to lesson time during the first week.

First lesson:  Meet with instructor; determine individual goals for semester, choose music, and receive first practice assignment.

Second lesson:  Prepare the given assignment, and bring all required materials to lesson.

Third and subsequent lessons:  Each upcoming week's assignment will be determined by the progress demonstrated during the previous week's lesson.

14th week of school:  All music for the jury examination must be memorized.

Monday of final exams week:  Individual music jury will be performed for the entire music faculty, in the Concert Hall.  Sign-up for time slots of 10 minutes per student will begin during the 14th week of school, in the Music Department Office, Room 302.
