Expected Student Behavior

Classroom behavior should not interfere with the instructor’s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to learn from the instructional program. College is a community of scholars. Unacceptable or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior may be instructed to leave the classroom. Inappropriate behavior may result in disciplinary action or referral to the college.

Students are responsible for contacting the instructor with any questions or concerns about the course. Students are encouraged to ask the instructor questions or get feedback. The instructor’s response time is usually within 24 hours on weekdays, and the instructor checks the course for email at least once on the weekend and holidays. Remember, the instructor is not a mind-reader, and communication is very important for success in the course!

STUDENT CONDUCT IN THE COURSE:  Here are the rules of the road :)

  • In our AC Connect course website students are identified including logins, coursework accessed, coursework submissions, exams, and email submitted to the instructor.  All course activity can be identified and accessed by the instructor and AC Connect administrators.

You are expected to refrain from any obscene or threatening dialog in the assignment discussions, assignments, projects, and any correspondence with the instructor or other students in the class, and if a student violates this expectation, it will result in a grade of "0" for that discussion, assignment, or project, will influence your grade, and can result in expulsion of the student from the course.  The instructor reserves the right to delete any student post in an online discussion. Students are expected to report any inappropriate behavior in the course to the instructor immediately.

  • Any violation of the appropriate conduct listed above will be noted by the instructor and considered in your grade as well as lead to possible disciplinary action or possible expulsion from the course.

DROPPING, WITHDRAWING, AND NON-CREDIT STATUS: The student is responsible for dropping courses, withdrawing from college by the last day to drop a course, changing to non-credit status, etc., if the need arises. See the Amarillo College master calendar on the AC website and our course calendar for the date of the last day to drop a course.  The instructor will not drop any student after the last day to drop a course.

DISABILITY SERVICES: Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements is responsible for contacting disAbility Services (Student Service Center, Room 119).  Any accommodation of this kind for this course has to be approved and processed by disAbility Services.  To qualify for services students must: provide documentation of the disability or sign a release to obtain such documentation. The student must also complete paperwork for the disAbility Services office, and make an appointment to review necessary services. For more information, please call 806-371-5436.

Grading Criteria

Grading Criteria

The final grade is based on a total of 100 possible percentage points that the student can earn through completing assignments, midterm and final exam, a team term project, as well as other grade considerations mentioned below.

89.5 - 100  = A
79.5 - 89 = B
69.5 - 79 = C
59.5 - 69 = D
0 - 59  = F

Core Curriculum Small Group PowerPoint project worth 25% of the final grade. Presented in class and evaluated by your fellow peers in the project

Final Exam: worth 25% of the final grade. Online like the other tests.

Common Assessment Team PowerPoint Project: worth 25% of the final grade. Information and guidelines for the team project will be available in the Common Assessment folder on our AC Connect/BlackBoard course homepage. The  project must follow the Common Assessment Team Project guidelines provided in the course.

You will be assigned into a small group, and your group will research and produce a PowerPoint project that your group will present in class and also submit on-line for a grade. Each person in the group will grade ones-self and the other members of the group. Details will be given.

AC Connect course grade book: Your course grades are accessed through the  “My Grades” link on the Course menu in our AC Connect course as well as other links in AC Connect.  You can access your grade book through the "My Grades" link on our AC Connect/BlackBoard Course Menu as well as other access points through AC Connect.

Due Dates of Course Work: You will find the time and date the tests begin and end in the Course Calendar. I will also give you the calendar as a paper hard-copy. Don't lose it.  Late assignments will not be accepted, except in the case of a course or campus wide malfunction of AC Connect/BlackBoard.  If this occurs, the instructor will accept the assignment or project late or arrange a makeup exam without penalty to the students.

Course Work:  You will complete your course work and tests in class and through our AC Connect/BlackBoard Content section. The exams will be given online through our AC Connect/BlackBoard course Content Page at the designated time periods. Again see the course calendar.

Exams must be taken during the designated period allowed. In the course clendar, I have given the dates the tests are available, which are only on-line,for each exam. In the case of a medical or family emergency, exams may be made up at the discretion of the instructor if the student provides documentation of the emergency to the instructor.

GRADING TIME AND STUDENT GRADE BOOK. After you take a test on-line, you should see your grade after submitting. The gradeis automatically entered into your grade. The student understands that the instructor may take up to one week after the due date to grade submitted coursework. The student is responsible for checking his/her online grade book (“My Grades” on the Course menu) in AC Connect to make sure that grades for coursework have been posted after one week following the due date and contacting the instructor about any questions regarding grades.

Also see Instructor Attendance Policy and Student Behavior sections of the syllabus for more information about grading criteria.

Attendance

Please come on time, every time.

You may miss only two times without a penalty. A third unexcused absence will result in 3 points deducted from your final grade. Too many absences may cause you to fail the course.

The instructor provides the opportunity to learn; therefore it is essential to meet in class as scheduled. This is especially true in an eight-week class, even though most of the assignments are delivered online.  Each student is responsible for any information or instructions missed because of tardiness or absence.

Students should notify the instructor of any attendance issue (future absences or tardiness) prior to the beginning of the class that will be missed. It is understood that there may be extenuating circumstances, but these will be addressed or excused on case-by-case basis at the discretion of the instructor.  Please see Communication.

  • Class participation is a large portion of the assessment and final grading in this course, and can only be achieved if students are present in class. However we do not want you in class if you are sick and contagious. You may bring a note from the doctor, nurse, or clinic to make your absence excusable and not count against your grade.

  • There may be a student ID scanner in the classroom to record attendance. Also the instructor will call your name for roll call recording your attendance or absence. Should you come in late after roll call, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to notify the instructor of your tardiness, otherwise you may be counted absent.

  • Class time is not to be used for other class assignments.

  • Students are responsible for assignments and information missed during an absence, excused or not.

  • If we are experiencing severe weather in this area (for example road closures due to icy and snow packed roads) I will notify students via your Amarillo College email for any class cancelations.  I generally follow the Canyon & Amarillo school district closures.  Some of you are living in a surrounding town. Should either of those close DO NOT RISK YOUR LIFE in severe weather to come to class – I will let you make up the work for that day, and will excuse your absence in extremely bad weather.

  • Please see the Code of Student Conduct Life for additional information regarding attendance for college sponsored events, athletic events or active military duty.

  • Students are responsible to notify the instructor if there is a problem regarding a disability that will cause the student’s work or attendance to be affected. This must be done prior to the submission of any grades.  Please see ADA Statement for more information. My cel phone is (806) 206-0099 and my email is jscost@actx.edu

  • The student is also responsible for dropping courses by the last day to drop, withdrawing from college, changing to non-credit status, etc., if the need arises. The instructor will not drop any student after the last day to drop.
