Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Exploration of leadership and management principles applicable to the roles of the professional nurse. Includes application of knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

Upon completion of the Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management course, the student will:

1.Discuss nursing practice within ethical-legal frameworks and according to professional standards and requirements in the management of adult patient care situations.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conductive to learning. Students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students.  Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class.

Grading Criteria

GRADING CRITERIA/GRADE SCALE:

 The following grading criteria will be used to determine the course grade:

  • Three Module Exams are 60% of the course grade. (20% per Exam)        
  • Evolve Specialty Exam is 5% of the course grade.
  • AC Connect quizzes are 3% of the course grade.
  • Evolve Case Studies are 2% of the course grade.
  • ADN Program Capstone Exit Exam is 30% of the course grade.

RNSG 2221 Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management does not have a comprehensive final exam.

The ADN Program Capstone Exit Exam is placed in RNSG 2221 and constitutes 30% of the course grade.

The following grading scale will be used to determine the course grade:
 

  • A = 90-100%          
  • B = 80-89%
  • C = 75-79%
  • D = 60-74%
  • F = below 60

Rounding of Grades:  There will be no rounding of grades in the ADN Program.  This includes all didactic (classroom and online) and clinical grades as well as HESI and Evolve Specialty Exam scores. (74.91% will not be rounded to 75%; 79.54% will not be rounded to 80%; 89.98% will not be rounded to 90%)

Any make-up exam must be taken within one week of the scheduled exam.

AC Connect assignments and quizzes will not be accepted after the due date.  Any AC Connect assignments and quizzes not submitted by the due date will be given a zero.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

In addition to regular classroom attendance of at least 90% of scheduled classroom hours and a satisfactory grade average (75% or above) in the course, course requirements include:

  1. Achievement of 90% on the Level IV Dosage and Solution Exam. The exam may be repeated twice prior to the clinical experience. Failing to pass this exam by the third attempt will result in the inability to attend the clinical experience and meet the course competencies.
  2. Satisfactory completion of any classroom assignments or AC Connect assignments and quizzes, including Evolve case studies.
  3. Satisfactory completion of the Evolve Management Specialty Examination. Students who do not take this exam will not pass the course. 
  4. Satisfactory completion of any student/instructor contracts.
  5. Satisfactory completion of two standardized exit examinations, including completion of individualized NCLEX-RN Preparation program(s).
  6. Satisfactory completion of any assigned online evaluations.
  7. RNSG 2221: Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management must be taken concurrently with RNSG 2263: Clinical - Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management and both courses must be satisfactorily completed with a grade average of 75% or above in the same semester.       

Attendance

Regular attendance is required.  Less than 90% attendance of classroom hours may result in failure of the course.

COURSE SCHEDULE:

After the first two weeks of the semester, class is scheduled on Wednesdays from 1030-1230 in Jones Hall and AC Connect as noted. During the first two weeks of each semester, students are required to attend additional class meeting times on Thursday and Friday. Detailed calendars will be posted on AC Connect.

Students, who have a general education course exam which conflicts with a nursing exam, may reschedule their nursing exam on an individual basis with the consent of the appropriate nursing faculty member and the Instructional Lab Resource Specialist.

Additional Information

TEACHING STRATEGIES/PERSONNEL:

Teaching strategies include classroom lecture, group discussions, case study situations, critical thinking exercises, and scenarios. AC Connect instruction includes reading assignments, discussion forum, quizzes, case studies, and self-assessments.  ADN faculty and/or guest speakers teach RNSG 2221.  

LABORATORY EXPERIENCE

Sixteen hours of laboratory experience are required in this course.  The specific requirements for the laboratory hours are included in the course manual and will be discussed during the first class period.

RATIO OF CLASSROOM TO CLINICAL HOURS:

The ratio of classroom hours for RNSG 2221: Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management to clinical hours for RNSG 2263: Clinical - Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management is 1:3.  The rationale for this ratio is to allow students to meet classroom outcomes, clinical outcomes, and graduation requirements for the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
