Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Study of concepts related to the provision of perinatal nursing care for childbearing families. Content includes knowledge judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

Expected Student Behavior



Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning.  In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructors, students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students.  Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class. Grading Criteria


Module exams (2) will comprise 70% of the grade. 

One EVOLVE Maternity Nursing specialty exam will be administered toward the end of the semester.  The Evolve Specialty/Customized Exam is worth 5% of the classroom grade (Conversion score: %). 

The final exam which will be a second EVOLVE specialty exam will comprise 25% of the grade. 

The grades earned will be based on the following scale;

A= 90%-100%

B= 80%-89%

C= 75%-79%

D= 74%-60%

F= below 60%

** Grades will not be rounded for any exam- including the Evolve scores.

Make up exams must be completed before the next scheduled examination.  An appointment may be made with the instructor to review the examination for 1 week after the classroom review of the module examination.




Regular attendance (90%) is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.  Please review the student contract for specific requirements.

According to the Academic Progression and Graduation Requirements for All Students, “a student may repeat any nursing course or combination of concurrently enrolled nursing courses (class and concurrent clinical course) one time only…Students may not repeat a course more than once or continue with more than two strikes or course combination in total while enrolled in the program.  The term ‘repeat’ shall be interpreted to mean re-enrollment following withdrawal, audit, drop, or unsatisfactory grade.”  Amarillo College ADN Student Handbook 2016.

RNSG 1151 Tuesday’s 10:40 to 12:40 for lecture.  Lab time is Wednesday’s 9:30 to 11:30.




Additional Information


This course  will consist of 1 Semester Hours of credit.  Included in the credit hours are 1 hours of classroom instruction and 1 hour of lab experience, which equals 16 hours of lecture and 16 hours of lab experience throughout the semester.  Lab experience will be comprised of audio-visual, classroom case studies, and EVOLVE online activities to increase the student’s understanding of the course content.


The course content will be taught by lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and audiovisual/online aids- including AC Online.  Instructors are Level 2 Associate Degree Nursing Faculty.

BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, PSYC 2301, Math, RNSG 1209, RNSG 1105, RNSG 1301, RNSG 1331, and RNSG 1362.

  1. Satisfactory completion of all assignments including EVOLVE case studies and Maternity Nursing specialty exam at the end of the semester. 
  2. Satisfactory average grade of 75% or above for course
  3. Regular class attendance of 90% or more
  4. All assignments must be submitted at required time.
  5. Satisfactory completion of online evaluations
  6. Class and clinical must be taken concurrently and satisfactorily completed in the same semester.  If a failure occurs in either class or clinical, both must be repeated in order to progress in the program.
  7. Completion of required labs with the required lab sheet being submitted the last day of class
  8. Remediation Statement for all courses except Introduction to Nursing (Level 4 Leadership and Advanced Concepts already have a remediation process in place):

    All students must access the on-line remediation through HESI Assessment after the course’s Evolve Specialty or Custom Exam. All students will develop an individualized study packet, and review all areas designated as needing improvement. Completion of remediation and development of a study packet is due by the Friday before the final exam. If it is not completed as assigned, then the student will fail the course because of a failure to complete this requirement. An allotted amount of time is required to spend in remediation based on the score of the specialty exam and is as follows:

    1. 1000 and greater 0 hr

    2. 900 and greater 1 hr

    3. 800-899 2 hr
    4. 700-799 3 hr
    5. 600-699 4 hr
    6. 500-599 5 hr
    7. 400-499 6 hr
    8. 300-399 8 hr
  9. Achieved at least 90% on the Dosage and Solution Test prior to administering medications in the clinical setting. Students may retake the Dosage and Solution Test only twice each semester. Students who do not achieve 90% or greater on the first scheduled test and first retake test will be required to review the questions they missed with the instructor and placed on contract for self-directed remediation. Students who do not achieve 90% or greater by the third attempt will fail the clinical course(s) that require the Dosage and Solution Test.1.

  10. Students who do not achieve a minimum passing score of at least 75% on a module exam are required to attend tutoring with the instructor prior to the course’s next Module Exam. Students who do not complete required tutoring will not be allowed to take the next exam in the course and will receive a grade of “0” for that next exam.


  1. Sixteen (16) hours of laboratory experience are required in this course.  The specific guidelines for each laboratory hour are located in the “Learning Activities” section of the course manual and on the course schedule.
  2. EVOLVE case studies, patient reviews and EAQ quizzes are recommended to be completed.  The specific assignments and due dates will be discussed and listed on course calendar.
