Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Application of communication theory and practice to the public speaking context, with emphasis on audience analysis, speaker delivery, ethics of communication, cultural diversity and speech organizational techniques to develop students' speaking abilities, as well as ability to effectively evaluate oral presentations.

Course Objectives: This course is designed to acquaint students with the fundamental techniques and basic principles essential to effective communication in various business-related communication, including informative and persuasive presentations and organizational communication. Through participation in assigned activities, you will:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the foundational models of communication.
  2. Apply elements of audience analysis.
  3. Demonstrate ethical speaking and listening skills by analyzing presentations for evidence and logic
  4. Research, develop and deliver extemporaneous speeches with effective verbal and nonverbal techniques.
  5. Demonstrate effective usage of technology when researching and/or presenting speeches.
  6. Identify how culture, ethnicity and gender influence communication.
  7. Develop proficiency in presenting a variety of speeches as an individual or group (e.g. narrative, informative or persuasive).

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

.  If you know that you will be absent or late and let me know ahead of time, I will not count count you absent or late. However, after 3 absences or 6 lates, I will have to count you absent or late regardless of notifying me.

4.  Any makeup or late work will not be accepted unless student has discussed it with the       

    instructor.

5. Presenters that are absent on their assigned presentation day will receive a zero for their

     presentation.  If you know that you will not be here that day, make arrangements with me

     before that day.

6.  “Plagiarism is considered serious academic misconduct” (taken from a syllabus by Dr.

    Trudy Hanson, WTAMU).  If the instructor has discovered that a student has plagiarized a

    paper or presentation, a zero will be given for that assignment.

7.  Please silence your cell phones.

    Anyone using an electronic device for anything other than an in class activity will be asked to

    leave the class.

8.  The last day to drop is. December 11, 2019.

Grading Criteria

60% - Presentations

                          5% - Speech of Introduction

                      10% - Personal Experience Speech

                      15% - Database Exercise

                      15% - Informative Speech w/ Visual Aid

                      15% - Persuasive Exercise

            15% - Final Exam

                                   

25% - Participation:  Class attendance and in-class participation (15%), assignments, quizzes and other various activities (10%).

Attendance

1. Regular attendance is essential.  This class is interaction oriented.  If you miss a class day,

    then you will miss the particiapation activity.  This will cost you a percentage of your

    participation grade (3 absences = drop of  one letter grade from final grade). No way to make

    it up.

2.  I can’t stand tardiness.  Each time you are late you will miss part of the participation activity.

This will cost you a percentage of your participation grade (6 lates = drop of  one letter grade from your final grade).  No way to make this up, either.
