The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) The grading scale for this course is:
A = 90 - 100%
B = 80 - 89%
C = 75 - 79%
F = score less than 75.0%
Three (3) section exams (100 points each)
Disease research paper (100 points)
Comprehensive final exam (150 points)
Your grade will be determined by 3 categories of work – the disease research paper worth 100 points the math TABE requirement, and the four exams worth 450 points.
Students not completing math tutoring as required by TABE Assessment by 12/6/19, will drop one letter grade in this course.
If a student is absent for a regularly scheduled examination, the student may take a makeup examination within seven (7) calendar days, but the highest grade a student can earn is 75%. All material given in this course (notes and reading assignments) will be tested during the major examinations. A student may not leave the room during an exam; if a student chooses to leave the room, the exam will be graded at that point of completion.
Keep in mind that grades are not given. Grades are EARNED based on student performance. Often the instructor plays no role in the grading process other than recording. Please be careful to note the requirements for earning the grade you desire and act accordingly throughout the semester.
A student who plans to pass this course should also plan to regularly attend all lecture sessions. Students chronically late for class or those with excessive absences may be at risk for passing this course. Each student with a tardy/attendance problem will be addressed on an individual basis with the instructor.
I want you to be successful and your attendance is critical to your success. In order to be fair, there is no distinction between an excused and an unexcused absence.
Any student that has 2 absences or less AND has an A average on the 3 section exams (this does not include the score from the research paper) may be exempt from the comprehensive final exam in this course.
Based on your score earned on the Math Assessment in RSPT 1225, additional math tutoring may be required in the Student Success Center (SSC) located on West Campus in Building B. Each student will meet with an instructor from SSC after the assessments are scored. If tutoring is needed, students will be given the criteria in order to complete the mathematics requirement of this course. Students will need to complete the sessions weekly as advised by the SSC staff. It will be necessary to make appointments that fit your schedule outside of respiratory class time.
There will be three regular examinations for this course.
Final examination is comprehensive.

REMEDIATION POLICY
The instructor will meet with students who perform poorly on exams (below 75%), or at a student’s request. During the meeting, both parties will develop a plan to gain better understanding of the information covered on the exam. In addition, student’s earning <75% on an exam, will schedule an appointment with the West Campus Tutoring Center after obtaining a prescription from the instructor. This prescription will cover items missed on the exam. The WC Tutorial appointment must be completed (on your own time) before the student can take the next exam in the course. If the student has not completed remediation tutoring by exam date, a penalty of -10 points per day will be assessed until 7 days past the exam. On the 7th day, a zero will be entered into the grade book for that exam.
GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
A student, who develops a problem with a course policy or the course instructor, should first try to resolve the problem with the instructor then the program director. If the problem cannot be resolved at this level, the student should go to the Dean of Health Sciences, and then to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
