Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

Supplies


Stethoscope, pen light, RNSG 2231/2262 course manuals, updated lab and drug reference books. See the ADN Student Handbook for clinical dress code policy. Students are responsible for reading and understanding the policy prior to the first class day. It is available online within the AC ADN Program site.

Please bring your computer to all clinical activities. Cell phones are not permitted in the patient care areas as per the facility policies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of RNSG 2262: Clinical - Advanced Concepts of Clinical Decision-Making;  the student will:

MEMBER OF THE PROFESSION

  1. Utilize an ethical-legal framework and applicable professional standards and requirements for nursing practice in critical care patient situations.
  2. Analyze own continuing competency needs in critical care nursing practice.
  3. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for quality nursing care of critical care patients and promotion of critical care nursing practice.

PROVIDER OF PATIENT-CENTERED CARE

  1. Function with increased autonomy to assist in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of the health of critically-ill patients and their families.
  2. Utilize a systematic process and clinical reasoning to implement holistic patient-centered care for critically-ill patients and their patient’s families.
  3. Apply nursing concepts specific to meeting the unique psychosocial needs of critically-ill patients and their families.
  4. Apply effective health teaching strategies in the care of critically-ill patients and their families.
  5. Utilize both basic and advanced nursing skills competently in the care of critically-ill patients.
  6. Demonstrate compassionate behaviors and appropriate communication skills in the care of diverse patients and their families within the critical care environment.
  7. Utilize available resources in meeting the needs of critically-ill patients and their families for comprehensive, quality care.

PATIENT SAFETY ADVOCATE

  1. Utilize evidence-based practice data to improve the safety and quality of patient-centered care in critical care environments.
  2. Practice according to the regulations of the Texas Nursing Practice Act and Texas Board of Nursing Rules to promote and ensure patient safety in critical care environments.

  1. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide holistic patient-centered care in critical care environments.
  2. Communicate in an appropriate effective manner with other healthcare team members to accomplish holistic patient-centered care for critically-ill patients and their families.

Grading Criteria

GRADING CRITERIA/GRADE SCALE:

The following criteria and grading scale will be used to determine the clinical grade.  Grades are NOT rounded in accordance with the Nursing Department Grading policy:  Ex 69.9 = 69.9 D; 89.9 = 89.9 B etc

1.    Clinical Performance Score – 100%

A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 75-79, D = 60-74, F = below 60.  Remember, grades are NOT rounded.

         **You must have a cumulative score of 75% or higher to pass the course.                

       2.    In order to meet clinical competencies, all clinical absences must be made up in the clinical area.  

Attendance

 Students must complete 100% of all required clinical hours.  Total Clinical Hours: 96

Additional Information

*All documentation for AHA CPR and immunizations are required to be updated and completed by the first class day.  Please bring copies of documentation forms/CPR cards to class on the first day of class.  Original copies will not be accepted. 

*Clinical will take place on Thursdays and Fridays.  Assignment to clinical groups will take place after the first classroom day.

 *The Clinical Experience will also include Clinical Simulation times which will be announced by the instructor and placed on the Course Calendar. Clinical Simulation is required as part of the completion of the course.
